Avast document shredder?

I just noticed that my Avast document / file shredder is gone. What happened to it?

already discussed here

Is the whole thing gone, or just the item in the context menu for the Recycle Bin?

In any case, I am wondering how secure the Data Shredder is. After shredding all the files in the Recycle Bin and making sure that it is empty, if I run Ccleaner it finds at least the names of some of the files that Data Shredder is supposed to have sent to oblivion. It is obvious that it is leaving behind some traces of the files. I posted this, but the Gods of Avast are very silent about this.

CC cleaner, not used that in years as was almost classed as a virus years ago.

The shreader is still in the UI

Wish you would read. (But, that has been my general experience with this “new, improved” forum. It is total crap compared to what it was a couple of years back when intelligent people responded with real solutions to problems.)

OK. First of all not all of us are that dumb to miss what is available in the software. The specific complaint was after a recent “update”, the entry for the Avast Data Shredder disappeared from the context menu for the Windows Recycle Bin. It has since been declared an Avast FU and that some new, beta version has restored it. So much for that.

The other complaint that I made was that Ccleaner was picking up filenames that were allegedly shredded by Avast Data Shredder. OK, it may have shredded the files, but why are the files showing up when Ccleaner tries to clean out the Recycle Bin. At a minimum, it is a security leak for any real shredder should get rid of any references to the files that it is supposed to shred. That is where Ccleaner entered the thread.

OK, but then, since Piriform, the creator or Ccleaner, was bought out by Avast in 2017 (see, Piriform Software - Wikipedia ), are you saying that that Avast is peddling a virus? Well, I do not know, but you seem to know much more and I would be very happy to read your take on this.

Looking forward to more enlightenment from you.

For this virus story, just start by reading the wiki article you provided:

In September 2017, researchers discovered that CCleaner was compromised by hackers who inserted a backdoor into the software, enabling remote access to infected machines.[9][7][10] The malware was in version 5.33 of CCleaner, prior to the acquisition by Avast. Avast quickly fixed the vulnerability and required version 5.33 users to update immediately.[11]

All of this has hurt both avast and CCleaner, which is (probably) why MrDJ is reluctant to use it.

Other information at the time (2017)

If you were on the avast forum at the time, there was also a long thread about the incident, but it was not carried over (archived) to the new community.

Firstly thank you @chris… for posting the links.

As a user like you i dont know why i bother sometimes to try and help in any way i can.

Sadly yes there seems to be a lack of staff members who actually work for Avast replying to questions so it is down to users to reply and sometimes we get it wrong. maybe i mistook your question, well im only human and wont bother next time.

“Is the whole thing gone, or just the item in the context menu for the Recycle Bin?”

you asked was the whole thing gone so i replied with a screenshot. apart from that on the rest of your question i could not answer so i did not add anything else. maybe if you had mentioned all of this in your initial post then it may be made a bit clearer as ive lost my crystal ball and cant mind read the issue your having.

I dont mind criticism but rude replies will get you knowhere. I will now be stepping back and not bother posting.

@MrDJ

Please do NOT step back just because of a puerile idiot and his posts. I moderate a forum and would have banned him for his reply.
