Avast does not detect win32:brontok on win98

Hi,

I found that Avast 4.7 up to date does not detect win32:brontok on win98.
Fortunately, it detects it on XP and I found the virus incidentally when connecting an USB key from the infected PC to an XP using Avast.
I redid a complete scan but nothing was found, and it seems that it’s not possible to plan a scan at boot on w98. Is that right ?
Is there a way to eradicate this bloody thing ?

One more thing : When connecting to the XP PC, brontok installed itself on it, even if Avast detected it on the key !!

Thanks to answers.

I’m guessing it’s the standard shield that’s detecting the file. If so, it should detect it on both os’s, depending if the settings are the same.

What is the name and location of the file that is being detected? Is that same file present on both machines?

A boot time scan is not possible on win 98. The next best thing is a scan in safe mode.

That’s strange - are you sure you had the same versions of the virus database (or even program) on both the computers?
Also, the particular setting of the Standard Shield protection is important - the file may not be scanned when read/written by default (on Win98), but it certainly should be detected on execution…
