hello all,
Why Avast 8 does not show Alert window when a virus is found in any folder until I go back to main folder or that file which I think is a virus and right click and scan it with Avast, then it shows Threat Detected. I mean this should be shown automatically as I enter into a folder which has a virus and show a Virus Threat Detected.
How to enable this Auto Alert Window?
Thanks.

what type of file / malware is it?
have you tested the file at www.virustotal.com
post link to scan result here
I go back to main folder or that file which I think is a virus and right click and scan it with Avast, then it shows Threat Detected.
can you attach a screenshot of the alert window

hi Leo999,
avast! performs two basic types of scans at its’ core:
A static scan is performed when one does the operation you’ve just described above or a quick or full scan is called for by the user. Your file is not actively running on your system but is inert and inactive. Static files can be detected when a manual scan is done, otherwise, no. A static file does not pose a threat until it becomes active and runs in memory.
Real-time scan: avast! checks and verifies all files running on your system at the moment they run, and if clean, allows them to continue. Example: You open Microsoft Word and all files related to that program are scanned at the moment they run.
Nothing to change re the operation of the Alert Window as that is operating properly as above.
Please follow Pondus’ advice and scan your detected file as well as attaching a screenshot of your alert. The fact that you think you have a problem is sufficient reason to investigate further.

Hi pondus, It is a HTML (saved web page) I tested infected file from www.virustotal.com and it also shows this as a virus. I have many Html files some are good but some are infected. This is https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/f5a4830196133224d03e79d8c71b8c0e28e0b125a98f556de94dd7ecbcabc76e/analysis/1381658346/
I had other AV programs before Avast and they gave an instant Threat Alert Window as I open a folder which contains a virus file but with Avast I have to right click and scan it then it shows this.
Avast is not scanning allfiles by default. This could be why you have to scan the folder.

then how to make it default so that it scans infected files by itself.
It scans infected files itself, but not some file types.
You can change this under the settings from FileSystem shield, web shield and The system Scan settings.

It does…
Is the html detected when you download and save it?
Is it detected when you try upload it to virustotal ?

Is there a reason you wish to keep this file? 41/48 detection rate would immediately result in a total and complete toss of whatever the file is just for my safety and sanity alone. Is it a part of a program?
McAfee’s properties description of this threat here: http://home.mcafee.com/virusinfo/virusprofile.aspx?key=2225263
First thing to do: Quarantine the file (you have that option per your screenshot) and then right-click it and upload it to avast! so they can have a look at it. Your file is much safer in quarantine than out in the open; in quarantine it can do no harm to your system.

Hello pondus, it does not scan already saved HTML files automatically, they were saved before I installed Avast. Before Avast I had Nod32 and it was detecting automatically as infected folder is opened and showed a Threat Alert window.
No it is not detecting it as I upload this file to virustotal. It olny detects when I right click and scan it with Avast.
Hello Mchain, I don’t need that file which I uploaded here for scan test but there are too many more which I need, they are tutorials of Auto-Cad, Photoshop, 3ds Max and some other softwares and I want to keep them. In Avast there is an option to Repair file then why it does not repair infected file or files. Its strange when it has an option and cannot do that.

it depends on the file and malware type
Clean, Quarantine, or Delete?. http://antivirus.about.com/b/2007/03/11/clean-quarantine-or-delete.htm
Clean: attempts to remove the infection from the file. This is only pertinent to virus behavior, wherein a legitimate file has been 'infected' with non-legitimate (usually viral) code.
On the other hand, antivirus software can't 'clean' a worm or a trojan, because there is nothing to clean - the entire file IS the worm or trojan.

Alright Pondus, but my main problem is not fixing the file but to give me a Threat Alert window which other softwares are showing.

if you open a folder that contain 4TB of data, i dont think any AV will then start scanning all that data…
so i think this has to do with file type and how it is executed…i may be wrong?
i also see this, i collect lots of virus samples so when i open folders with samples some are detected at once…
when i right click the folder and do a on demand scan, more is detected…
anyway i have sendt a PM to somone that can explain this a lot better then me, so check back later for a reply
Avast will scan on access: so if you open a file it will scan it, if you just look in a folder then as nothing is being accessed it will not be scanned unless requested by a right click.
If that HTML file is accessed it will be scanned and reported if need be
Also a normal or boot scan will also detect it

Hello essexboy, when I open (double click) that infected file Avast let it open in firefox browser and give me popup message that I attached here. Is this normal that Avast is not stopping it from opening, is there any chance for virus or malwares to attack in system or is there any danger when it opens? Other sofwares were not letting it open and were giving Alert Window.
Avast does not like the site it is trying to contact, so I would suspect that there is no real infection as such just the link to a bad web site contained within it

Alright. I did not find any other kind of virus yet, I hope that if other kind of virus is found from USB Flash or external HD this should not open them and should give an Alert and stop it from processing.
You can use McShield as a second layer of protection against USB’s. This is install and forget
Download McShield to your desktop and install
It will initially run a scan and show the result as a toaster by the system clock
Then in the control centre select scanner and tick unhide items on flash drives
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/mcshield%20unhide.JPG
Plug in the drive and McShield will start a scan

I installed MCshield and checked Always unhide items on flash drives.
Thank you essexboy and other members for your time and guidance.
