I had Avast installed on my brother’s computer and he didn’t get the registration key in time. The entire program stopped running after it expired (meaning no blue a). He got a serial # and set it up but there’s still no blue a. The antivirus seems to be working but I can’t get the real time protection to function. Any help?
Well that isn’t because of not registering on time, the program would continue to work but wouldn’t allow you to update, it wouldn’t remove the system tray icon.
So there is something else in the mix.
I can’t understand how the program seems to be working yet you can’t get the real time protection to function, the two are opposites.
What avast processes are running in Task Manager, they begin with ash or asw, see image ?
Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
It isn’t the resident protection (ashserv.exe) but only the icon on system tray (ashdisp.exe).
To get it:
Check the option in the Appearance tab of settings.
or
Repair your avast installation through Control Panel like David suggested.
or
Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder
or
If nothing helps, please, uninstall, boot, install again, boot.
What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc.?
