I can’t run avast to scan my computer. It stop at memory test with a dmserver.dll. Avast has stopped for ages.
I don’t know what is the problem with my computer. I logon and it is very slow starting up. I looked at the events and there were some problem with apache service and I turned it off. Everything is slow to open.
I have used avast home edition for long time. I use windows professional XP pack 2.
Please, somebody helps me!
Thanks
Elenir
This dll should be the “Logical Disk Manager” for Windows NT family of OS’s which includes XP.
Please see the link below and make sure the version numbers are the same.

Hey sagitta,
Are there any strange occurrences on your computer? Like random pop-ups, IE redirects, changed desktop background etc? Also, besides Avast, what other protection softwares do you have?
Try the following:
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for Windows 98/ME/2K/XP and Vista
- Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser

Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
- Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Hi Charlie
I have seen the link you send to me. Yeah they said that this dll is part of the system but my computer stopped. Nothing always running well even avast. I scan avast in safe mode and it detected this dll as a trojan, so I boot and scan all computer and put this dll in quarenten. The computer seems to be good now but I don’t have another dmserver.dll in the system. Anyway I didn’t delete it. I don’t know what was the original file with this trojan because it was not detected by avast.
Thanks for your reply
Elenir
Whilst the file name might be legit, that doesn’t mean it is the same file or that it hasn’t been infected.
However I remember at least one other topic that mentions dmserver.dll so it would be worth a forum search as I believe replacing the file resolved the problem. This is one of them http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=40363.0, so I would suggest you confirm the detection, see below.
You could also check the offending/suspect file at: VirusTotal - Multi engine on-line virus scanner and report the findings here the URL in the Address bar of the VT results page. You can’t do this with the file securely in the chest, you need to extract it to a temporary (not original) location first, see below.
Create a folder called Suspect in the C:\ drive, e.g. C:\Suspect. Now exclude that folder in the Standard Shield, Customize, Advanced, Add, type (or copy and paste) C:\Suspect* That will stop the standard shield scanning any file you put in that folder. You should now be able to export any file in the chest to this folder and upload it to VirusTotal without avast alerting.
Hi David
I followed the procedure and tried to check the suspect file at virus total but it takes long time and does nothing. I did it with other file in the past and it is quick. I still keep the dll in quarentine. I checked the file at http://www.programchecker.com/file/5319.aspx and the report said it didn’t match with the original file. Actually the computer is working ok but I can’t find another dll with the same name in my system.
Thanks
Elenir
Well it shouldn’t take long to upload to virustotal (this isn’t a big file) but it would depend on if there was a high load at virustotal, in which case you could email the sample to them, there should be info on how to do that on the site.
Did you create a suspect folder, exclude the folder and contents (as instruction above), copy/export the file from the chest and upload from the suspect folder ?
Did avast alert when you tried to export it to the suspect folder or when you tried to upload to virustotal ?
Avast alerts when I exported to suspect folder and I had to turn avast off. It’s a bit strange because avast didn’t recognize the file as a virus in the beginning, it just stopped the memory test for ages. The avast alert comes when I scanned boot the computer.
I found another dmserver.dll in my computer but it is not in system32 as it would be. It is into a software distribution/download but as it is part of an update download I think is ok.
Thanks
Elenir
That is because you didn’t exclude the suspect folder and its contents (c:\suspect* ) in the Standard Shield as I said.
That would also account for the results in programchecker.com as when avast alerts it won’t let you do anything with that file, so I believe you have a file called dmserver.dll that is 0bytes in size, doesn’t match the original.
The problem is what version is the one in the software distribution/download folder, it is likely to be an old version and you should only use the correct one. You are using XP SP2 whilst SP3 has been out for over 5 months, I don’t know if updating your OS would also bring a newer version of this file.
Thanks David
The version that I have in the software distribution folder is the same as your from 04/14/2008 which I think is the original one but it is not in system32.
I was a little afraid to install the SP3 because many people complained about. The updates are ready to my computer and I will do it now. Maybe it solve the dll problem.
Thanks
Elenir
OK good luck.
