The same probem. Avast cannot update and cannot install from online installer. Only from offline can.
Windows 7 home ext. SP1, Avast 17.3.2291
I uninastelled it 2 times, cleaned reginstry and all remainders from avast. No effect 
Always Unexpected error!
I guess Avast cannot connect to his server at all.
