Avast download site?

I want to download Avast 5 free version to try on an XP Pro machine.

I can’t use CNet for download. It doesn’t work and never has on any OS. I’d have to disable my security to get download from that awful site to work.

Anyhow, where is the Avast download from AVAST site? All I see is that horrible Cnet stuff. Avira free tries to do the same thing and force you to Cnet, but with Avira I know how to get a download from Avira itself and I can get just the English version. How do I do that with Avast? (I don’t want Softpedia, Tucows, or anything except a download directly from Avast. I didn’t have this problem with Vista because I downloaded the beta 5 and that was not at Cnet and then I upgraded to the release version on top of the beta version). I see that I can download the ALL Languages version directly from Avast. Why can’t I download the English version from Avast?

If you replace setup_av_free.exe by setup_av_free_eng.exe, you’ll get the English-only installer (though the difference in size is rather small, compared to the whole file, and you certainly don’t have to install the additional languages, so I don’t see why you have such a problem about the all-language setup).

igor, why don’t we have an option to download from CNET or the avast servers?
Can’t you support the bandwidth?

I don’t get , what’s the point , there isn’t any difference if you download from Cnet , that’s what i call “silly principles” no offence

Some people don’t agree with the redirection. Feel it is safer to download directly…

http://blog.avast.com/2010/04/01/misdirection-on-the-internet-2/

The reasons: the update timing of CNET servers compared to avast ones; we have already in the past the fact of corrupted CNET files and the avast servers were correct; redirection; there are people that do not trust in CNET.

Yes, I saw that the all language was not a lot larger, but I also saw that ALL languages EXCEPT English could be downloaded directly from Avast servers so I think English should be there too. I thank you for explaining how to get the English only installer and I replaced it as you showed. I must say that I am impressed with Avast servers. I got just as good download speed from Avast as I would have from Cnet plus I got a STEADY download speed which I seldom get from anywhere. That indicates a good connection even though I am way off in Hawaii. The download speed was only about 1/2 my capped speed but that is good considering how far away I am.

As Tech has pointed out, Cnet has corrupted files frequently, files full of viruses, plus, I don’t like Cnet for 12 years now I have avoided Cnet. I don’t even like reading reviews, articles there and now they stick a silly popup on every page trying to get you to join Cnet. That is irritating to have to keep clicking that out of the way. As for Avast direct download, I guess because it is free you feel you need to get some funding from Google, but I think that is unfortunate. I don’t like Google. I don’t have an account there, I use Scroogle for search. I have nothing of Google’s and block all attempts of Google to profile me so I wasn’t very happy to see you wanted me to install Chrome along with Avast. I suppose if I had not done a custom install I would found that piece of crap on my hard drive. Still and all, Avast has sure done the right thing with their ad. I like the static ad. I have even, in the short time I’ve had Avast on the Vista virtual computer, found myself almost ready to buy an Avast premium version. That is because your ads are tasteful and effective. They are the exact opposite of the awful popup ads that Avira inflicts which make you determined that you will never give Avira any money!

No, you’d be asked as well - it’s certainly not installed without your consent.

You should have seen this during the installation. It is an opt-in choice.

Hi

I did a normal install of Avast 5 - & - I was still asked if I wanted to have Google Chrome… OR - Not!

I don’t like CNet either >:(
Although I have used it in the past… I do try to avoid it if at all possible ::slight_smile:
However!
Where it’s not possible to download straight from the source… I Like to use - FileHippo: http://www.filehippo.com/
FileHippo just seems more organised and Clean

Yeah, I saw that. And guess what? It was NOT opt in! The box to install Chrome was CHECKED BY DEFAULT. I had to OPT OUT. So, I find it hard to believe I would have been asked at all if I had not chosen a custom install where even there by default I was already opted in for the Chrome download. After I saw that, I recalled that I have seen complaints recently around the net in Security forums about this Chrome download being Opt OUT like it was for me.

Well, I can only speak for myself, and as you can see from the image nothing was checked for me until I chose it.

Odd though if as you say, it was pre-checked. As I know it, it was always the decision of ALWIL to have it opt-in

At this moment Google is my search page. If I type : Avast Free ,I only get pages from Avast. You can dowload it directly.
I.m using it for almost a year and sofar it does what it should do. Succes Jenny

FWIW you can download avast! 5 Free from FileHippo:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/

v. 5.0.462 and older versions

Or it was a bug or you’re wrong. It’s an OPT IN (or should be).

Where?

Hi

I’m sure there was No (.) in either of the radio buttons when I installed Avast 5 on both my Laptop and Desktop.
So! … Although I couldn’t exactly call it - Opt In
Certainly couldn’t call it - Opt Out

And as I said…
I did Not do a custom install … Just a normal default install 8)

I think you might be getting confused with the Comodo and the ASK Toolbar ::slight_smile:
