Avast e-mail scanner with SSL

Have been using Avast Home for some time now and have also installed it on several of my friend’s computers.
IMO it is an excellent anti-virus programme and works without a hitch. Only one problem - I cannot install it on
the computer of one of my friend because she uses Gmail and I understand that the e-mail scanner is not compatible with
this. Please could someone tell me how long it will be before AWIL will develop/introduce a version that will work with secure servers?

poppy; don’t let the fact that Avast doesn’t work scanning Gmail stop you from installing it… There is a product called STUNNEL that can also be installed which will allow Gmail email to be scanned by Avast… One of the guru’s will/can probably give you more information on that…

Personally, I forward my Gmail email to another account that doesn’t use SSL and download it from there using my email client of preference Outlook Express…

Couple of recent threads on the use of STunnel to allow scanning of pop3/smtp email using SSL/TLS encryption at http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=41945.0 and http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=32731.0. Fairly simple one-time setup that is supported and used by many of the Avast! users. You will need to download a copy of STunnel including openssl, and set up your email client and a Stunnel.conf file to support the scanning as discussed in the threads. Some of the references have copies of the actual gmail Stunnel.conf and setup for Thunderbird and other email clients. Search on STunnel or ask here for more details.

Have taken a look at the links and this clearly requires a lot of thought (I am OK with computers but things like this do not come easily to me).
I had a difficult time configuring SSL with AVG8 for my friend so I need to study the Avast solution very carefully before making any changes.
I had read that Avast 5 would take care of this problem and I wondered how long it will be before it is released? Has a date been given? If it is likely to be fairly soon then I might wait.
Thank you very much for your help and advice.

No date have been given, Vlk said first half of 2009 in an old post ( http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=39327.msg330271#msg330271 ), but rumours in the forum, they said june or july or something like that.

Thank you very much for the information, which sounds fine. Can wait until then and look forward to the new version.

Yes, we all do that
