Avast Email Scanner

Hello everyone, I’ve tried avast! in the past and didn’t like the updating, I always thought that AVG updated more frequently than avast! and that therefore AVG was better. However, due to lots of reading on the Internet and forums etc., I have found that avast! is likely better than AVG. My question is, I’m running Thunderbird as my email client. Comodo AntiVirus and AVG can both scan through Thunderbird. Does avast! do that as well, and if so, do I have to do some special configuring or does it do it automatically? Any help would be appreciated on this matter.

Wow, when compared to AVG avasts update process is stellar the free version of AVG restricts how many times you can update.

If you are using thunderbird for normal pop3 email no problem it is seamless (winNT, win2k, winXP), if you use SSL/TLS secure email or using gmail, etc. you will need to use a third party interface, STunnel.

What is your ISP, does it use SSL/TLS email and what ports are used for pop3 and smtp email ?

I always found that AVG updated once a day and that avast! had like 3-4 per week average. In terms of email scanning, I use Thunderbird for MTS Webmail, my provider is MTS and they use POP3 for the accounts. I do have a Gmail account but I set it to forward all emails to the MTS. This is because I got my MTS after my Gmail and since MTS has no adds or anything and is easier to use with clients, I just foward all my emails rather than telling all my contacts to switch me over to a different address. Will doing this with Gmail affect avast!'s ability to scan the emails? Or will it just see them all as my MTS regular POP3? Thanks for all your help.

Sorry I don’t use thunderbird, but by all accounts if you have the Tbird, webmail extension that downloads webmail to pop3 email that should be scanned.

Thanks David. I’m likely going to use avast! You’ve made a convert!
