Avast Error?

I have been using Avast Free for quite a while now.

Today after MS updates were installed it has started to display an error.

  1. On each reboot it stalls,” system not totally secured”, when clicked on it’s icon shows Web shields are turned OFF.

  2. After 30 secs to a min they turn on automatically?

  3. Even if the program is opened & all shield manually turned ON, reboot get the same error?

Is it to do with some of the updates, all Avast services are started & on auto?

Previously used to turn off web shield but never faced such an issue…now even the web shield is on but still on each reboot all shields get turned off?

Is there a fix or do I need to uninstall it & than reinstall?

Happy Thanks Giving & Best Regards!

I would try doing an Avast Repair to see if this fixes your problem:

  • Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > Avast Antivirus.
  • Scroll down and choose Repair function in the pop-up window.
  • Reboot.

What were some of the updates you did on your machine? Some users with XP had issues with last update and the following:

Winsockfix Utility:
Windows XPhttp://majorgeeks.com/WinSock_XP_Fix_d4372.html

Slow XP SP3 StartUp Caused by .Net Framework 4 (MS Update) - Fix

If these issues appear fine and the Repair did not fix the problem, then I would suggest an Avast uninstall and clean install. Let us know how things work. Thanks.

Thanks got if fixed…it was to do with disabling “mscorsvw.exe” MS Net framework NGEN v4.0.030319 X86 service.

Best Regards!

Can I now manually turn off webshield?

Thanks.

Yes, Open the web shield interface and click the Stop option, select the duration. Or are you talking about turning it off permanently ?

The question would be why do you need to do this ?

This will decrease your protection. Why are you using it manually or disabling it?

Thanks DavidR & SafeSurf… Unchecked scan web HTTP Traffic, do I still need to stop it permanently? To increase dsl speed…web shield decreases it.

It may slow you down slightly, but the main goal is to provide you protection…it is scanning things to protect you. Isn’t that what you want?

There is something else in the mix, I have recently got a new fast broadband connection and that makes no difference.

I have just run two tests, image1 with web shield enables and image2 with web shield stopped, you will notice that the one with the web shield enabled is marginally faster.

So I would be looking at what else on your system might have an impact on the web shield, e.g. all security applications, etc.

I certainly wouldn’t disable the web shield as the greatest majority of malware originates there. Also Simply unchecking the scan http traffic won’t work as the traffic still passes through the proxy, it just isn’t scanned. This is why I gave the specific instruction about stopping it :stuck_out_tongue:

Stopping it really isn’t a good idea as a) you lose protection and b) you will get nagged to death that it is disabled, you have to do more to stop monitoring if it is running or not.

Same question.

Absolutly no problem for me.
