Avast Expiring ---- Why ?

I received a msg box telling me I was “unprotected” and that my Avast Home Virus program had “expired”.

Why is this??? ???

If I go to “about Avast” I get the following under registration key info:
Type: Home
Expiration: Never
Updates Expiration: Saturday March 1, 2008 12:00:00 AM

When I click on the link in the “red” msg box I am recommended to upgrade but have the option to stay with the “home” version.

When I click on the link to register I have three choices on the Avast web page:

  1. I’m a new user and I need a registration key for Avast! Home Edition
  2. I’m a registered user, but I lost my registeration key
  3. I’m a registered user and my registration key has expired and I need a new one.

The closest choice that applies to me would be #3 but…

  1. I don’t remember ever needing to do this before
  2. I have a registration key on file that already shows in the “about Avast” already.

Why is this happening since I have a registration key on file and am registered and the registeration key states that it NEVER EXPIRES. ???

Should this happen and what do I do? (maybe I just don’t remember this happening before but I really don’t remember needing to do this in the past).

Can I or should I just enter my old registration key (assuming that I can do this) or do I need to request a NEW registration key be emailed to me (option #3 offered) and enter that one (please see original, above, post)?

It is my experience with any other software I have that I have just ONE registration key and that stays with the software permanently. I want to avoid any issues with Avast and want to make sure I don’t do something that creates more problems so I am hopeful that I can get some clarification without just guessing as to whether I really should or need to get a NEW registration key or all I need to do is use my current registration key again.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Have you checked your system date?

My system date is the correct date and time.

I went ahead and registered via the link provided on the Avast web page and entered the new registration key number emailed to me.

It changed my registration slightly for 2 numbers toward the middle of the entire registration key that I had before.

My about Avast now reads under the registration key as follows:
Type: Home
Expiration: Never
Updates Expiration: Friday May 01, 2009 1:00:00 AM

Thus the last line “Updates Expiration” changed to what is listed now (above) from:
Updates Expiration: Saturday March 1, 2008 12:00:00 AM

I have no idea what relation the dates have considering that we are currently in February, but I presume that I will now get virus protection updates okay as opposed to the “red” warning message regarding registration expiration.

Maybe I just don’t remember doing this in the past since at my age even though a year seems to go by so very fast it at the same time still seems like forever when I think back to specific events.

As long as it works I’m happy… ;D

The avast program is free and as such doesn’t expire, the updates however, have an expiration date and as you said “Updates Expiration: Saturday March 1, 2008 12:00:00 AM.”

avast starts to notify you of the pending expiry, I believe 3 weeks before expiry, this would fall in with the notifications that you were receiving.

You should choose option 3 as that will send a new registration key, which should be for 14 months (Home version). So this matches what you said the new expiry date is, “Updates Expiration: Friday May 01, 2009 1:00:00 AM,” 14 months after the original 1 March 2008 updates expiry date.

So your updates should continue without problem.
