Avast! Failed AV tests

I Downloaded Antivurys Tester 3.0 @ http://drn.digitalriver.com/product.download.php?id=56121&url=avtst30.zip&itn=1

Avast failed the worm tests. I am very dissappointed because I just purchased server and exchange licenses as well as professional for every workstation in the network for a client of mine. I also will be placing a big order for another client of mine. McAfee picked it up, as well as PC Cillin. I am surprised because I thought this was one of the best. Is there a reason this may be happening? I guess the best way would be to actually download a worm somewhere.

I downloaded it and gave it a run and it showed my avast(home) to detect it, as expected so i dont know what your problem was? Are you sure about your configuration / setup? 8) the issue i presume you had is with Heuristics and as i understand this is not a feature of avast so its always gonna fail that.

I am VERY sceptical about such products - what do they test? Real viruses? No. So called “simulated” viruses? But the reasults are totally questionable in this case. I remember the Rosenthal virus simulators back in DOS era - the whole idea was complete crap. But some antiviruses started to detect his inocent files just to pass these “tests”. Can you believe it?

Don’t be - just take a look on more serious tests done by professionals - like VB or ICSA :D.

LOL ! In their latest version they added the eicar test file ;D ;D ;D Should have been there in the first version already if you ask me. This doesn’t make that application sounding very reliable to me

I guess I should have done a search first. I apologize for that. Does anyone know where I can actually get a netsky or nimda (or whatever else is out there) to try it out? I am really happy with the anti-virus in general. I guess you could be right about the “sample viruses”. It uses little resources but seems to be pretty effective. I have seen it find some small trojans, but have not seen it detect anything major yet. My email also gets filtered by Postini (which has a built in Anti-Virus), so usually it does not even get to my mail servers or my clients’ mail servers.

Netsky and Nimda are both ITW worms thus both 100% detected by avast!. We cannot provide you info on where to obtain real viruses or worms. Sorry its against forum policy.

ctechsol,

the anti-virus software companies have the EICAR test file to test your anti virs software. Use that to test.
