So I was reading an email and decided to test Avast 8 free’s capabilities of detecting malware, etc. It said if I successfully downloaded a particular file I failed a Potentially Unwanted Applications test.
It did pass the phishing test which was interesting because this shouldn’t be available on the Free Version!
Here is the site. http://www.amtso.org/feature-settings-check.html
Any suggestions to settings adjustments I can make to prevent this download from happening?
Thanks in advance!
Turn PUP’s on in the Web Shield sensitivity settings
Phishing protection is included in all versions of avast, you just need to have the browser protection module installed.
@Craigb
Is this enabled PUP option in Web Shield going to cause annoyances
during downloading and installing apps ?
I have PUP checked as option during scanning and I don’t have any problem.
It’s never caused any problems for me yet but then I don’t download any obscure programs, only well known trusted programs or apps make it to my system
downloaded a particular file I failed a Potentially Unwanted Applications test.PUP = not a virus / Possible Unwanted Program. (some vendors call it PUA) a program that can be good or bad if abused...
usually these detections relate to toolbar crap/adware that comes bundled with other programs, but there are also legit factory installed programs from HP / DELL / Toshiba detected as PUP because of what they can do, so you need to know what is detected before you take any action.
I am using normal apps but sometimes they are beta versions and I have
warnings about low reputation from Reputation Service.I am talking about
beta versions of PotPlayer,EagleGet,Icaros thumbnailer etc. Will I have
also warnings from Web Shield with PUP checked about beta versions of the apps.
I cant answer that as it’s a trial you’ll have to do and test, you should be able to exclude if necessary.
I just reran the PUP’s test
Avast blocked for me
Pups detection is checked in 4-5 shields
should be easier
