Avast failed to protect my laptop - infected now

Hello,

I don’t know how did that happen, but suddenly Avast is using 100% CPU, the laptop fan is going crazy, and Google chrome is filled with something called “Rolling around ads” which I have no idea how did that get in my laptop. but this is definitely not a legit Ad engine as my laptop is really slow now. Looks like that’s what causes Avast run at 100% CPU.

Has anyone heard of those bastards “Rolling around ads”? How can I remove it?

Thanks

Attach your basic logs. (MBAM, FRST and aswMBR…!!)

OK MBAM is scanning now. already found so many infections. WTF? Just about 2 days ago I did a clean installation.
Seriously, what’s the point of Avast then, if you tell me to use MBAM?! it just slows my laptop when I’m infected, instead of protecting me before I get infected .
I guess I will do a clean re installation again.

no security program have 100% detection…

We need to see those logs first, but guessing those mbam detections are PUP ?
PUP = not infection / Possible Unwanted Program … crap that comes bundled with freeware downloads
avast PUP detection is default off except for in boot scan, so you need to turn it on in all shields/scan types if you want it

Thanks, I’ve already performed a clean installation, and I do not have the logs, there were too many infections.
This incident, and the fact that the new Avast installation forces me to install unwanted softwares has made me abandon Avast for now after many years of trust.

As it was a clean install I should imagine you were downloading all your programmes. Did you get a lot of Free programmes and did you do custom install or just click away ?

Was Avast set to detect PUP’s ?

Chrome is now becoming very susceptible to subversion and addons are installed willy nilly if chrome is compromised

I only downloaded a few free programmes and I think all are trusted: HP printer drivers, AMD update drivers, Microsoft Visual Studio, MBAM, and that’s it basically.

In that case I would assess that Chrome was subverted, I am getting a lot of cases like that now. It appears that some of the original Chrome files are slightly altered

Personally I would look to another browser rather than Chrome

I only downloaded a few free programmes and I think all are trusted:
many trusted programs also comes bundled with pup .... example is java that comes bundled with ask toolbar

yes, but java allows you to choose whether you want to install or not. I always check before I press “Next next next”.
The weird thing is that Avast - an Anti virus software - the last program you would think will force you to install unwanted softwares, actually does so, without an option to uncheck them and suddenly you get installations of softwares without your permission actually. For example Dropbox, really annoying.

there is something called custom install

Avast 2015: Changing, adding, or removing individual program components and features in setup configuration of Avast Antivirus

But the giant button says “Express - recommended” (if I remember correctly) , so the other option is less visible. Also, why won’t I press a recommended installation for an Anti virus software? I’m not a PC expert, if I see recommended installation for an anti virus I believe it’s there not to install more softwares that I do not want, but recommended in terms of providing best security 8).
In other softwares you clearly see the softwares you’re about to install and they’re not hidden down in a smaller button.
Thank you for showing that option to me :), next time I will install Avast I will do that .
