Avast Fails to Start-Please Help

I just installed the Avast home edition and all I receive is the following error message: The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006). Click on OK to terminate the application.

I had Trend Micro 2007 on my computer, uninstalled it using the uninstall utility that comes with the application and then rebooted the computer before installing Avast.

The computer is: HP AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile with 2GB RAM

The Operating system: XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2.

The version of Avast that I am trying to install is the most current (non-beta) version you have on your Web-site.

I have uninstalled Avast through Add/Remove programs and tried reinstalling and still have the same error.

What should I do now?

Yeah… seams some remains (leftovers) of the old Trend Micro installation…
Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

If this does not help, I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again the last version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.

First let me say thank you for your quick response, however, none of these suggestions worked.

I uninstalled Avast and rebooted the computer
Reinstalled Avast and rebooted
Avast tried to start as soon as I logged into the computer and ashAvast.exe popped up the 0xc0000006 error
Went into add/remove programs and ran the repair process
Rebooted the computer and received the same error

Any more suggestions?

I still bet on a bad uninstallation of NAV…

Avast still fails to start. Here are the things that I have tried:

-Uninstalled Avast with the avast removal tool
-Used Hijack This, RegAlyzer and RunAlyzer to determine if there are any references in my registry to “trendmicro” or “trend micro” or “pc cillin” - all references were removed.
-Even though I had Trend Micro’s AV software installed, I ran the other software removal tools noted earlier in this thread
-Rebooted laptop
-Reinstalled Avast
-Error again
-Removed Avast for the nth time and rebooted laptop
-Installed Antivir_workstation and it runs without any problems
-Installed Spybot SD and it runs without any problems

It appears that Avast is installed correctly but doesn’t start. The error code doesn’t provide me with any useful information. Useful information might include: “can’t find configuration file xxx.xxx” or “process zzz123 prevented initialization”.

Based on what I’ve read Avast offers better protection than Antivir, assuming Avast can be installed and run. IMHO Avast needs better self diagnostics to determine the cause of failure on initialization and/or installation. As it stands, I have invested five to six hours of my time (and I’m old so time is precious) for this “installation” effort without any success. I could only be more frustrated with this software if I had already paid for it…

I removed Trend from the computer before I tried to install Avast for the first time. I’ll pull a copy of the log file right after I reinstall the software again.

This seems the error. I’ve not found any occurrence for 0x000003E7 error… seems it’s not a common problem. If you search the board for ashBase.dll keyword, will any of the threads help?

Is it possible that the ashBase.dll is corrupt in the most current install?

I doubt that as a lot of users will be with the same problem…
I bet (again) on leftovers of other antivirus…

I identified why avast was not starting.

Here is how I identified the problem: Avast was written in MSVC++ (I assume only for the Microsoft based OS’s). The ashbase.dll was failing when any of its processes tried to execute. This meant that either there was a problem with the Avast code or that one of the DLL’s in the operating system was damaged. After doing some digging around at Microsoft Technet it turns out that the error code 0xc0000006 is a problem in the msvcp71.dll.

Here is the solution: Run chkdsk /F /R from the command prompt. After the drive has been scanned and possibly repaired, replace the msvdp71.dll with a copy from a known safe source. Install Avast and everything should be okay.

I have two computers with XP Home. I just copied the DLL from the “good” box to the to the ailing box. I also mistyped the name of the dll, the correct name is msvcp71.dll. It is located in the windows/system32 directory.
