Avast, Firefox, and Windows Vista

Hi,

for about 3 months, under Windows Vista system only, and when Avast anti-virus surveys the PC, Firefox freezes the whole machine after few minutes ; the mouse can’t move anymore, nothing happen. The only solution is to stop strongly the machine ; but it occurs each time you want to use Firefox.
Did you hear about this problem ?
So, it’s possible to set Firefox as an exception in Avast, to make Avast not survey Firefox ; and it runs well
But it’s not a real solution because virus can pass through Firefox for Avast doesn’t survey Firefox activity anymore.

So, what is the right solution ?..
Thank you for your answer.

  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premier)
  • Which version…?
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

The behavior that bcristof describes started for Vista users with the Avast update that came after version 2015.10.2.2218. 2218 is the last Avast version that DOES NOT cause computer freeze/lockup. I have tried every update since, including the current latest version, but had to revert back to the 2218 version to avoid the freezes.
While I use Firefox most of the time, this problem has also occurred while on IE. My OS is Vista 32 bit, completely updated. I use Avast Free final release (NOT the Beta). I have also tried older versions of Firefox, graphics drivers, and removed all Windows updates that came out at the same time as the Avast update to no avail. They ONLY action that stops the freezes and returns my machine to a stable usable condition is returning to 2015.10.2.2218.
If I remember correctly, the troublesome update came out in July 2015.
Hope this helps.
