A little while ago, the Avast Secure Browser hung. It could not be terminated with Task Manager and it prevented the computer from restarting. I had to do a hard shutdown to restart the computer. When the restart finished, Avast had updated. Now the firewall will not turn on. I don’t suppose being a paid user comes with tech support as my only options were here and paid support. And now I have to enter this stupid verification nonsense (which thinks it is still 2020) and restart my computer again after my second “repair.”
A ‘Repair’ of you Avast installation may help
In the UI Go to Menu>Settings>Troubleshooting and Click on “Repair App”
I have repaired twice and reset all settings as well. The firewall is still off and clicking “Turn On” seems to do nothing discernable. It takes less than a second for the button to return.
Without knowing basic info: what version of Avast you’re running, OS and if any other security software is installed on your system you might try a ‘Clean Install’.

@drake.d What other antivirus, antimalware or other security software do you have installed now or in the past?
If other software is (or was) installed, then make sure you clean all traces of it using the software specific uninstaller before installing Avast.
