Avast! For A Laptop?

Hi guys,

A friend of mine is using an HP Pavilion DV6000 W/ Windows Vista. She doesn’t have ANY AV on the machine and is of course having all kinds of issues. She told me she used to use AVG, but that it made her machine run slowly and when it found viruses, it couldn’t remove them. So now she has nothing.

I’m going over this weekend to fix her machine up and of course I am thinking of Avast! for her AV protection. Unfortunately, I have no experience using Avast! on a laptop. So, here’s my question(s):

1.) The new version of Avast! seems to have a much smaller footprint than older versions. Will it run on an HP Pavilion DV6000 without slowing the machine?

2.) Assuming that her machine and Avast! play nice together, is there anything special I should know when putting it on her machine? Anything unique to Avast! running on laptops?

Thanx very much, for any help you guys can give.

  1. yes, im am running avast AIS on a Lenovo netbook and no problem
  2. no

clean the computer with this before you install avast

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.46 http://filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
always run update before you scan so you have the latest database
click on the remove selected button to quarantine anything found

Thanx Pondus! I figured it would be fine.

Hi…

Along with MalwareBytes, you can also run a scan from one of the free online scanners like Trend Micro’s HouseCall.

Thanx Ardvark. I was going to use the free online scan from BitDefender. Maybe I will try both

You’re welcome, I hope it helps.

I’m running Avast! on a 5000 series HP laptop with no problems at all so it should run fine on a 6000.

If AVG wasn’t already removed, or you want to make sure all remnants are removed, here is the removal tool:

You may want to ask to find out if any other security software was on the machine prior to AVG, like a trial AV, and also run the installer for this as well.

right on  Thanks for all the help guys. I appreciate it. Will have the machine fixed this weekend and will post back on the results.

as SafeSurf say. HP machines usually comes with a preinstalled 60/90 day Symantec/Norton
