Avast for Dummies ?

Good afternoon.
I just purchased the Avast Internet Security software ( an hour ago). I have it on my computer (not the one i’m on right now) and everything appears to be running. Granted there are features that i am not familiar with. My problem is, now that it is operational, I can’t seem to get on line…at all. Even when attempting to get support, it wont open a site. It keeps telling me a problem displaying (…) has caused Internet Explorer to refresh the web page using Compatability View. I am running a new machine with Windows 7…

I have used Avast before in the past and i’m running the free version on this computer as well. I purchased software a few years ago for a different computer (no longer in use) and didn’t have any problems at that time running it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can’t even down load the manual right now…

I am running a new machine with Windows 7..
was this new computer delivered with a preinstalled antivirus? if so, did you uninstall it before installing avast?

Yes, it had Norton installed and i did uninstall it prior to purchasing the Avast.

I also just ran a repair and still not able to access the internet.

How did you uninstall Norton?
You need to use the Vender Clean-up/Uninstall Tool. just to make sure there are no remnants left over to corrupt/interfere with Avast

I uninstalled it from my control panel. Now, i will save the site you gave me to use. However, i can’t access the internet from the computer i am having trouble with. The computer with issues is not the computer i am curently typing from. I am at a total loss here. I am not IT savey. I’m beginning to think my next recourse is to uninstall Avast as well and start over. I don’t know, i’ve never had any trouble with the Avast product till now…

Uninstall Avast, download both the Norton removal tool https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?docid=kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us&product=home&pvid=f-home&version=1&lg=en&ct=us

Download aswClear from here
Go to Programs and Features > add/remove and uninstall Avast
Reboot back to safe mode and run aswClear (
Reboot

Install the updated Avast

Ok…going to the other computer to uninstall now and try again… See what happens…Thanx

Ok… all is good now. Avast is reloaded and working. Thanx for all the help…
