Avast Free 10.3.2219 HTTPS corruption

Ever since the latest upgrade to 10.3.2219, I’ve been getting web browsing errors (I mostly use the current Firefox) with some HTTPS sites that load a lot of images. One Example:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/friends/ is always failing. It doesn’t display any images, but has a line stating it is showing 302 images.

This is brand new apparently with Avast 10.3.2219

Some other HTTPS sites also act strange or fail. All work fine if I customize Web Shield and uncheck HTTPS.

I had HTTPS enabled with the prior version with no problem.

Windows 7 Pro, all updates, Firefox 38.0.5. Both Firefox and Avast recently updated.

Is the previous version still available?

Yes. If you don’t want to beta test R3, follow the instructions:

  1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

I feel the similar way; website using https seems to be unstable since installing beta3.
Page not loading (no error message though, loading circle rolling forever), some images disappear (reload solves this in most cases) or so.
Not all the time, but time to time.
No troubles with normal http website.

I mostly use Firefox.

Well now XP also has HTTPS scanning in the R3 beta, I’m seeing a distinct slowdown in HTTPS page loading, notably these forums.

Whilst I haven’t had any page errors that I can relate to the web shield now scanning HTTPS in XP. That said my uk.yahoo.com portal is pretty screwed up for the last few days, coinciding with the R3 beta build. But no errors displayed as such.

One big issue is there is no setting in avast on XP to be able to disable HTTPS scanning (even to test).

@ gerr_g
I was unable to access your URL, it wanted to redirect to my yahoo login, even when logged in it didn’t redirect to your link and gave an error “Sorry - page not found (Error code 404)” from BT.com

  1. Hi Dave, while I wanted to test it a few more days (before reporting), I basically can confirm this.
  2. Also confirmed and already reported here: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=172367.0

Yes went to open my yahoo mail, signed in fine, but inbox not loading or anything after that. didn’t check before Installing R3 though, so don’t know if it worked fine before R3 or not. Anyways guess will wait and see if Avast issues a fix for this issue, as don’t wanna really have to remove Avast, and reinstall as yet lol, but will if I have to

Works for a bit, then says Page Cannot be displayed, Does same for youtube lately on this system, Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit with Media center
Avast 10.3.2219 R3 Installed
Over top of 2218, willing to do clean install if will fix the issue

Internet Explorer 11 (only browser installed)

Confirmed.
What happened to the https scanning?
Web pages load slow or not at all.
It’s a little better with https disabled.

Hi, is this HTTPS only issue? No problems or slowdowns with HTTP only sites? Problems complety gone when HTTPS scanning is disabled?

Thanks. Lukas.

Problem being in XP there is no entry for HTTPS scanning in the UI to be able to disable it.

@ lukor

I’m also experiencing problems with some HTTPS page layouts (totally screwed up) my uk.yahoo.com portal page.

David,
the missing settings is mapped to:

WebShield.ini

[WebScanner]
HttpsScanning=0

(Web shield restart will be required after changing the WebShield.ini file)

With Https scanning disabled, i’m not noticing anymore problems with sites here, played 4-5 youtube videos, (yesterday would play 1 or 2, then would eventually goto Page cannot be displayed suddenly), Yahoo mail wouldn’t load properly, (Does with it disabled so far)

Need to the webshield ini portion on XP Machine and see if that one performs better in a few minutes here

Hello Lukas,

I confirmed that disabling HTTPS scanning in WebShield settings solved the problem.
For example, I cannot access this website with HTTPS scanning enabled.
After disabling HTTPS scanning (and restart of WebShield), I can access it.
https://kaken.nii.ac.jp/

I also confirmed the problem with IE11.
IE11 gave me an error message saying enabling TLS 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 are needed to access the website, although they are already enabled.

Hi Lukor,
I added the HttpsScanning=0 line directly below the [WebScanner] section heading, saved it (confirmed Self-Defence module question) I stopped and restarted the web shield. But it is still scanning HTTPS content.

When you say “the missing settings is mapped to:” do you mean that when I add the HttpsScanning=0 line, the setting should also now appear in the avast UI (As I can’t find any sign of it) ?

Hi Lukas

With Firefox and HTTPS scanning on : I have slowdowns, and on the forum even error messages.
No problems with HTTPS scanning off, so there is definitely something wrong.

Greetz, Red.

Same here, I also got the 400 error quite often, a reload usually helps.

Hallo. We have found a problem in the HTTP(s) scanning engine and fix will be included in next beta release.

But, about the flickr problem, I’m not able to reproduce the problem here with current beta. Is enough to enter flickr and browse the site, or I have to do something else. And is the problem generic or related only to one browser, please ?

OK, thanks Zdenek.

Me too.

Thanks for the conformation.
I didn’t post it earlier, because I was not sure the 400 error was Beta related.

Thanks

Greetz, Red.

Aside from having found the problem with HTTPS scanning - are you also going to fix the UI where XP users don’t have HTTPS scanning options.

Currently I tried a fix from Lukas: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=172470.msg1224686#msg1224686
WebShield.ini

[WebScanner]
HttpsScanning=0

This however doesn’t stop HTTPS scanning in XP, Firefox 38.0.5, nor does it change the user interface.
