Hi all.
I have a strange problem with avast not updating definitions while saying that it doesn’t need updating (!?).
I found out about the problem because one day I had a pop-up message from avast saying I should update my definitions although I never turned auto-update off.
Anyway, I went to settings/update, pressed the update button and the program said I was already up to date.
I could see that the date from my definitions was very old but the program didn’t update no matter how many times I pressed the button (also after a restart/shutdown).
I uninstalled/reinstalled avast, still nothing.
I uninstalled/reinstalled using avast clear and ccleaner, still nothing.
Then I realized that I had the same problem on my laptop as well.
I decided to format the laptop (it was due anyway) and after installing the drivers, without installing anything else, I installed avast. I noticed something strange, without entering my email or anything it said I was already registered. I’m not sure if it still doesn’t update, it’s been a few hours since the install. I installed it at 1pm and at around 5pm it said it was already up to date. I don’t know how often the updates come out.
Let me say lastly that the OS on both PCs is windows 7 x64 home premium.
Does anybody know what’s going on?
Thanks!
Do you recive stream updates?
Stream updates? What is that?
If you are referring to the program updates, I don’t have it to update automatically, but when a new version is launched I update it manually from settings/update, the same way as the definitions.
That installs fine (I think). It does the whole update routine, and the restart that is required.
Let me add that I have now uninstalled avast and trying to clean the registry completely, but it won’t let me delete the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\ entries of avast, even in safe mode.
Did you use the uninstall tool ?

Last but not least, in seeking perfection, we will release the Continuously streaming update (CSU) technology or, in other words, we will see 300 to 400 daily virus definition updates, almost one each 3.75 minutes, 24/7, 365 days a year.
OK, so I reinstalled avast (after using avastclear again) and now all the shields are refusing to start. Then it crashed. I noticed that the avast service was not running. I managed to get it started manually but the program doesn’t acknowledge it. What the hell is going on??? I think it’s goodbye Avast after many years…
Edit: Actually I didn’t manage to manually start the service, although windows says it started, when I double click on the service, it allows me to start it (again), not stop it. When I click start, then both start and stop buttons are grayed out.
The new avast! is here!!!Took a clean install here https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=176600.0
