Avast Free 2015 - Newsgroups Timeout

I recently switched from AVG to avast and I like it much better  but… now when I try to login to usenet via Thunderbird, I get timeouts (I did not have this with AVG). When I disable avast, the timeouts vanish. I unchecked “Scan newsgroup messages (NNTP)” in Settings > Active Protection > Mail Shield - Customize > Main Settings, but still no joy. I’m running XP SP3.

Is there a way around this in avast? I don’t want to go back to the very Draconian AVG >:(

Thanks!

Timeouta are known when outgoing mails are checked…

Did you remove AVG completely (including using the uninstall tool) before installing avast ?
What exact version of avast do you have ?
Did you import avast’s certificate in Thunderbird ?
Is your email provider using ssl ?

Thanks for responding.

I did completely uninstall AVG, using “Add Remove Programs” in XP.

The avast version is 2015.10.2.2218

I don’t know how to import the avast “certificate” - I don’t even know what that is :).

No, my email provider is not using SSL.

You mean this is a known issue with avast?

So you didn’t remove AVG completely.

  • Use the tools to uninstall AVG and avast.
  • Reboot
  • Check manually for leftover folders/files and remove them
  • Reboot
  • Run CCleaner and remove all unneeded files it find.
  • Run CCleaner to cleanup the registry. (Keep scanning/removing till nothing is found any more)
  • Reboot
  • Install the latest version of avast

Eddy, thanks for the step-by-step instructions - it worked! …CCleaner showed several leftover AVG registry files before cleanup.

You’re welcome.
Good to hear everything is working now as it should.
