Avast Free 2019 - will not renew license; GUI error messages

I would really appreciate some help with this weirdness:

Avast Free 2019, latest version (19.2.2364) on Windows 7 PC

The initial trial period license has expired and will not renew, neither automatically nor manually via the steps shown on the Avast Support page (https://support.avast.com/en-ca/article/Activate-Free-Antivirus). The license info page still says the license is expired (‘you are unprotected’), no matter what.

In the 5 days leading up to the expiry date, a pop-up kept coming up every day saying that the license expired on that day (the day of the popup, not the actual expiry date). I had tried to renew on eaxh of those days, numerous times, with no success nor change in the conflicting expiry date notifications. So I waited until the license did expire (which was yesterday), made sure to update to the new version, and, still nothing.

I established an account, hoping there might be something there that might help. There is not. Further, when I use the GUI to login to the account, I get an error message (“sorry we’ve run into a problem, please try again later”), however upon closing that login window it returns to the registration info page, on which it shows that I am in fact, despite the error message, logged in to my account.

In addition, after getting frustrated today and opting to ‘repair’ (via the Troubleshooting Settings menu page), after the repair and a computer reboot, opening the GUI Registration information page now spins its wheels and eventually just produces an error message saying “sorry something went wrong …” and clicking on the green ‘try again’ tab does absolutely nothing.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Any suggestions will be appreciated - would love to figure out how to get this license renewed.

Avast is hounding me with large pop ups with bold red text, telling me the license is expired. But it will not renew. Not sure if it makes any difference to its operation or not (if there is no renewal), but the intrusive red constant reminders just might drive me away in any case :frowning:

  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

If you uninstall it, you should be offered the ability to switch over to the FREE version.
or you could simply do a clean install of a paid version and purchase it.

Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit, SP 3

I used AVG-Free before, and completely uninstalled it prior to downloading Avast. Standard Windows firewall (on which I have ensured all Avast processes etc are set to ‘allow’ / not blocked). I do have Windows Firewall Control (Binisoft) on the machine - it is a tool that helps Windows Firewall accessibility but does not act as a firewall on its own. I do not think it is interfering because I exited it, set it not to reload on boot-up, then tried to renew the license - without success. The Avast GUI behaviour does not change, regardless as to whether or not the WFC process is running. No other security products in use.

Not sure if browsers matter or not - I use the latest versions of both Chrome and of Opera.

I do not want the paid product … I simply want to stay with the Free version, with an active license so that I know it is all in working order and so that I do not keep getting all these ‘your license is expired’ notices. But every time it tells me it can renew the license and I follow that right procedure, it does not renew. And the ‘something went wrong’ error message isn’t at all helpful :-\

Thank you both, Asyn and Bob3160, for your help.

Edit: sorry, should have mentioned: the failure to renew occurred in the previous version plus in the newest version since updating. I have not tried to completely uninstall the program and start all over again with a new install (and therefore a new 30 day trial license), as it’s my understanding that updating to the new version is basically the same as doing a fresh install? I could just start all over, but am concerned that I would then be facing this same problem all over again in 30 days.

First, be sure to get rid of all remnants of your prior installed AV(s)…!!
https://support.avast.com/article/11/

Then:

  1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe
  2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

Done; done; done; done … and, Done! License expiry date Feb 2020 - thank you, Asyn.

Still getting an error message (“sorry we’ve run into a problem, please try again later”) when logging into the account via the GUI, but hey, phfftt, not worth fussing over.

Thank you again.

You’re welcome.
