Avast Free 5 does not update!

Good afternoon, everybody … want your help!

I installed Avast Free 5, and perform the update offline, only updates the first time, and the second time, the error, displaying the following message:

Can not install VPS update. Please report the following error code:
Ver: 5.0.462
SI: 0x00000002
ST: 0xFFFFFFFE
LE: 0x00000000.

I tried to reinstall and download from other sources and always the same error.

I do not know how to …

Are you using the latest 5.0.462 avast version?
Which was your previous update? How did you uninstall it?

Yes, latest version 5.0.462. It’s in the error message.

I am using the latest version (5.0.462) in a computer (Win XP SP3) newly formatted. I ran the removal with an uninstaller common.

Hmmm… Sorry for the first question already answered.
Any firewall besides the Windows one?

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
  7. Check and post the results.

I’ll make a guess here…
Can you open the command line window and run:
chkdsk c: /F
