AVAST FREE 7.0.1426 NOT UPDATING

Hi all,

happy avast user here, or should I say unhappy and sad avast user now. :frowning: :frowning:

The reason I say this is because Avast! does not update for me now from time to time and as a result I have had to uninstall avast completely uncountable times now.

Avast i7.0.1426 s set on automatic update for virus definitions and each time I have reinstalled Avast it automatically updated twice then after that I have to manually update it even though it is set on automatic update.
Can someone from Avast PLEASE tell me WHY this is happening to me?

I hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you

Hi try this

Download

avast! 5 & 6 & 7 series VPS update, size 31MB

From: http://www.avast.com/download-update

See if it works after that…

You can update it by the Avast interface

By clicking on Avast
Then click on MAINTENANCE
Then UPDATE

How is your update intervall set?

You could give more information as if avast’s auto update fails you should get errors, what errors are you getting ?

You should first try an avast Repair or even Update from the Control Panel, Programs and Features, Change.

Hi it is set to update every 120 Mins (2 Hours) and it worked well tell a few months ago.

Hi David R No error message comes up st all about auto update I check the user interface and that is when I discover I need to update and from there I do a manual update, surely I should not do this ALL the time now…

Do you have the avastUI, Settings, Updates, Proxy Settings, set to ‘Direct connection (no proxy)’ ?

If not I suggest that you give it a try as the auto detect proxy may not be working, as it tries to get it from your IE settings.

Thanks DavidR will check that out…

You’re welcome.

Hi DavidR I just wanted to say THANK YOU SO much for your help regarding the above matter the other day, I really appreciate it.
I have set updates, Proxy Settings to Direct Connection (no proxy) and it seems to be updating a lot quicker and faster now.

I am sure that the auto detect proxy is NOT working as now I have set it to Direct Connection (no proxy) the updates seem to be working for me now.
Maybe someone from avast! can look into the auto detect issue and see if there is a problem with avast! and the auto detect setting?

Thanks again.

You’re welcome.

Unfortunately there are times when avast can’t get the proxy information from the IE settings.

Why this happens I have no idea, but there obviously has to be a default setting, that theoretically would wirk even if the user did have a proxy to connect.

That said it is I feel better to set the actual method of connection, be that Direct Connect (no proxy) or Manually setting a proxy if one is used.

I am having problem with updating avast. my windows is XP and I have version 6.0.1367 of avast

This really should be in its own topic as it is not for the same version and you version is well out of date.

My recommendation is do a clean install of the latest version as there is little benefit in chasing problems in old versions.

This assumes you are using the avast free version:

  • Download the latest version of avast, 7.0.1466 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for 5.x, 6.0.x and 7.0.x).

    1. Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 6.x if previously installed and then for 7.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

Edit typo version avast number.

tired of avast updating.not updated.tried manual updating.downloaded vps updates.64mb file.was an exe file.tried to open it. gave me error. these are for avast 4 and lesser versions or file is corrupted. but i downloaded for avast 5.0 pro version!.

There are two versions on the link that was given by adotd in Reply #1 above. They aren’t for a specific avast product free/pro, etc. but for an avast version.

avast! 5 & 6 & 7 series VPS update
avast! 4 VPS update (old product), version 4.8.0

It looks like you downloaded the wrong version, your file name should be vpsupd.exe but I think you downloaded vpsupd4.exe, which is for avast 4.8 and the error message would be correct.
