Avast Free 8.0.1489 will not update since 8th August 2013

Avast Free v8.0.1489 will not update virus definitions or program since 8th August 2013. Everything else works, just no updates. Keep getting red screen pop-up of Avast being out of date. Keep looking in the forum but no tips on how to fix it. Now what? ???

Have you tried doing a repair of avast?

How do I do that? Thanks for the reply btw.

You go to the control panel>Programs and features/uninstall a program>find avast in the list>Then click uninstall/change.
Once you click that button an avast UI should open up that will look like this… When it opens click repair then the next button on screen.

Did that > got a pop up msg of “Avast Error. Error processing packages. Please use full update” ??? Would use update if it would work…

Download and run: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/vpsupd.exe

Downloaded that Avast file & ran it > end result was a pop-up of “VPS database already up to date”.

Anything else before I do a complete reinstall of Avast totally? ???

Just wondering but what does avast say the current version of the VPS database is for you @sandlwood? When I look in the avast gui it tells me the current VPS database version is 130812-0.

We’ve got 130809-0. Still not updating…

  1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

Same problem here as sandlwood reports, only my Virus Definition updates stopped at 13802-2 and Windows Security Centre reports ‘Avast may be out of date’.

Manual update connects but fails to download new definitions.

Can anything be done short of a complete re-installation? (Program Version 8.0.1489)

[Forgot to mention … Avast home page: Smiley Face and ‘Everything up to date and All shields active’, though everything is clearly NOT up to date.]

Yes, all options (before a clean reinstall) are mentioned in this topic.

PS: Is you sig up to date…!??

Thanks Asyn,

I’m assuming that if I try the repair options attempted by sandlwood, I’ll probably get the same result.

Maybe, not and I’ll give them a try as soon as I have the time … and update sig too …

  1. You’ll have to try it.
  2. Good.

Well I did the uninstall of current Avast version, had already > again > downloaded today the latest Avast from site. Wouldn’t work, wouldn’t load, crashed the pc four times to blue screen. So today’s download of Avast was deleted & now, after almost all day fighting with this, I have the original avast > only now it doesn’t recognize I’m on Chrome or the Windows XP > both of which I’ve entered into settings PLUS THE DAMN PROGRAM WILL NOW NOT TURN ON!!! I’M FLYING BLIND!!! This is not the first, second, third or fourth time THIS YEAR over problems with Avast programming. Really over the rubbish now. >:(

  • OS…?? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?)
  • Other security related software installed…??
  • Which AV did you use before avast!..??

Windows XP > SP = BigPond > no other AV > prior to Avast was Microsoft Security Essentials, MalwareBytes & AVG. I downloaded MSE today but when I ran that, pop up of ‘corrupted file’. Really over it.

  • 32/64 Bit…?
  • which SP…? (1/2/3…??)

32 & sp3

Just tried about 10 days of system restore points > none worked > Avast still will not turn on & comes up as ‘not responding’. Each time net is turned on, browser comes up for Avast Chrome extension for completing installation but can’t redo extension download for already downloaded…
