Avast Free and Windows Installer

I am trying to install Avast 7 Free on my Vista SP2 machine, but when I install it, it gets to 100% and then Windows installer starts and hangs. I have cleaned my system and made sure any remnants of other antivirus programs are removed. PLEASE HELP!

When it hangs, can you, please, upload (attach) the avast log:
\Setup\setup.log
If the file is too big for the forum, post the last 400-500 lines of it.

Hi,
There is no Avast log. It never finishes installing. The Avast installer window is still open at 100% and the Windows Installer “preparing to install” window is over it.

Any other antivirus installed? In the past?
Other security program? Firewall?
Did you try to download the installer again?

There’s an earlier release of 7 that was previous to the latest one, it’s 7.0.1407. You might try that one and see if it installs. Or there’s a long list of previous releases at FileHippo. If 7 won’t install, try 6. Once you get an older verision installed, you can update from the Avast interface. I wouldn’t go back farther than 6 though.

Try a new installer first. If all else fails, you might have to go through your registry and clean every old registry key related to Avast. It’s kind of a drag, but sometimes a totally clean install will work wonders.

@dogluvrrr: how did u make sure that all remnants of other antiviruses were removed? would like to know because standard windows uninstall is insufficient to remove antiviruses cleanly.

if u need a previous stable version of avast, fall back on v6.

v7.0.1407 has more bugs than v7.0.1426 (there are some significant bugs in the autosandbox for that version for example).

Thanks everyone for your answers/suggestions. After trying all of your suggestions and a few of my own, nothing changed. I finally downloaded original version 6. I turned off my network connection and was able to install the older version. Then reconnected for the engine/def updates. (excluding the program update). After reading all the problems people are having with version 7, Avast should be ashamed, knowing it has so many bugs/problems with it, but released it anyway. The answers given to users by Avast makes it look like the user is the problem, not Avast. Such a shame. I’m sure there will be thousands that change to another program. To bad…
