avast free antivirus and Chrome

Will this free version of avast work with chrome? I am uninstalling IE8 beacuse I have windows xp.
thanks

Sure.

Thank you very much!!!

You’re welcome.

You can’t uninstall IE 8 from XP because some parts of it are used for other things than browsing (e.g. showing help files)

Instead of Chrome, I suggest to use Opera
I assume you are having a old(er) system since you are using XP.
Opera is much lighter on resources and much faster.

If I don’t, doesn’t that make me vulnerable to viruses etc? I’ve already removed it but avast is saying update IE8. From what I’ve been reading, everything points to removing IE8. I really should get another computer, but funds are limited right now, that’s why I did it. Thanks for the input, much appreciated.

It may be possible to uninstall IE8 from XP (if you have the supporting update uninstallers) as that wasn’t the browser that came with XP. So you could end up with an even worse position with an earlier version of IE (probably IE6).

So best to stick with IE8 but don’t use it.

I went back into add/remove programs and noticed IE7 in there so I removed that also. There are a couple IE updates that I left alone. Should I reinstall IE8 but don’t use it or will I still be vulnerable?

Yes, install it again (including all updates).
But don’t use it.

Please don’t fall into that commercial bullshit talk.
“Microsoft will stop support for XP tomorrow and therefore your system will be more vulnerable for malware”
Let’s see…

Microsoft is not stopping support for XP tomorrow.
Companies, organizations can buy extended support for the next year and MS will be supplying (security) updates for XP during that period.

Let’s say it is now 23.59H.
Will my system be less secure if I wait 2 minutes?
I bet it isn’t.

Each day less people are using XP, which make it less interesting to people who have bad things in mind.
If this wasn’t so, why did they stop developing malware for e.g. Windows 3.11 ?

This business about installing/uninstalling IE needs clarification.

IE is an integral part of your operating system, and therefore cannot be completely removed. You can however take IE back to the original version that came with your OS. But that doesn’t mean you should. For whatever operating system you have, you should have the latest version of IE installed that is compatible with that OS, and keep it up-to-date through Windows Update. For XP that’s IE8. But that doesn’t mean you have to use it as a browser.

It sounds like I should be installing ie8 again. Yes I do have xp, but since removing the browser, I haven’t had any problems so far. I’m a senior citizen who uses the computer very sparingly. I don’t download games, other than party poker and poker stars. Most of my time is spent receiving and sending emails, searches, and reading the news. So, do you still say I should download it again?

I appreciate the feedback I have gotten, thank you all very much!

Yes re-install IE 8. There are some parts of your system that still require IE to function properly.
I have a Win7 and it has IE on it, I just don’t use it. I use Firefox (preferred) and Chrome as my
main browsers. Having IE 8 on you machine does not increase your security risk.
