I had been having problems with my Windows XP (SP3) Gateway where any time avast! 4.x would pop up to announce virus definitions have been updated the machine would blue screen with IRQ_NOT_LT_EQ or PFL_List_Corrupt. Since avast! updates a couple of times a day I would blue screen a couple of times a day. I decided I would try the avast! 5 to see if that resolved the BSOD problem. It did to some extent but I still am blue screening but less frequently. My problem now is yesterday avast! Free version 5.x reported my system was “unsecure” I clicked the start buttons and tried via Windows Administrative Tools → services but it wouldn’t start. I found command line tools and updated my program and definitions then was able to start the service. Today the machine blue screened while trying to load Inferior Explorer. When the system booted avast! 5.0.462 is again in an unsecure status. I tried starting services, they start then stop. The tool in the GUI fails to start the service. I tried the command line but it says the definitions and program are already up to date.
Please try a repair of avast to see if that will help.
To do a repair of avast :
Control panel > Add/remove programs > click once on avast to select it > click on Change/Remove > scroll down the left pane and click on repair > click OK > follow directions.
The repair having failed I looked at other options in Change/Remove. I selected change then looked at the shields. I do not run instant messaging (IM Shield) so I disabled that. The program downloaded some files, said the change was made. I opened the user interface, it was still unsecure. I clicked the fix button and it is now running. I don’t know whether the problem is with the IM Shield or just making some change put the program in a state where the service could start.
I had disabled the IM monitoring portion of Avast and was able to restart the service but after Windows blue-screened a day later the Avast service would not start. I tried disabling P2P monitoring but attempts to restart the service or reboot failed to get Avast running again. I’d done the Add/Remove programs Update Avast but still nothing. Today, having had Avast tell me my computer was unsecure for 3 days I came back to this forum. While drafting this note I again went to Add/Remove … Avast update and finally was able to get the Avast service running again. I never had this problem with version 4 and haven’t made any changes to the computer. If version 5 keeps having problems I will have to roll back to version 4.x
