I am on W10 and Avast Free up to now has been fine. Today, all of a sudden, the ‘X’ shows up in the desktop notification icon every 15 minutes or so with the information ‘You are not protected. Avast Background Services not running’.
So, I restart it and it is fine for another 15-20 minutes and then it stops again. This is the first time this has happened.
Program version: 10.4.2233
Virus Def Version: 151121-0.
Can anyone advise why this is happening and how I may rectify the problem of repeated stopping?
In all honesty, suggesting a Repair after a program update is like the horse after the cart. Program update or clean install would be after the Repair.
But in this case with an old version there is little benefit trying to resolve a problem that is most likely old program related, e.g. the windows 10 OS updates and causing issues with old program versions of avast.
Well, I did a clean install using the download link (thank you) after first completely uninstalling the previous version using Revo. So far, so good (after 30 minutes…). I’ll report back if I still get the problem.
As I said in my first post, the older version never had this problem with W10 which has been on my computer for months now.
@ dnimon
Sorry if my post confused. It was directed to Be Secure’s post (advising a repair) directly above yours. A Repair is generally not suggested after someone (Asyn) has already advised a program update.
I have the same problem - every so often (30 - 60 minutes) the service stops, and bizarrely the shortcut appears on my desktop (I delete the shortcut since I can access the application from the task bar).
I have just installed the latest version (11.1.2245) and the services stopped.
I have been using Avast forever and apart from the odd false positive, this is the first time it has played up.
Question # 1 Have you rebooted the system since the update ??? If not, try that.
If that doesn’t solve the problem, do a repair of Avast.
Program and Features > Select Avast > Select Repair.
Once the operation is complete, Reboot.
I’ve tried rebooting and repairing with no success - the service keeps stopping still
Looking at the service, I can see that upon failing the first and second times it will restart, and upon subsequent failureit runs
C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\setup\instup.exe with the parameter /instop:repair
which explains why the shortcut keeps re-appearing on my desktop. I am denied access to make it restart on subsequent failures.
If this isn’t fixed soon, I’m going to have to go elsewhere for anti-virus
One of the problems with jumping on someone else’s post is that we don’t have all of your information. Do a Clean install following the directions already stated. If you still have problems after that, then please start your own topic.
