Avast free blocking web browsers.

well today i was blocked from all my web browsers.

Internet explorer, Google chrome, Safari5, Opera

none of the browsers would connect to the internet, they would just look they were loading. but would come back with a message that they couldn’t connect server, or the server was unresponsive.

i have since uninstalled AVAST free edition, but will be putting it back on hopefully.

i have other types of scanners on my system, but not running at the same time.

Spyware doctor
Spybot search and destroy
IOBIT security 360

the issue was only with the browsers, everything else would work, like Steam games could download from the internet, i had to use this to use in in-game overlay and access the steam games browser which worked.

as soon as i disabled Avast the browsers instantly connected.

the system i have is a windows Vista ultimate 64bit
6GB ram
over 1TB of free HDD space

I’m not 100% sure if this was a complicating factor that might have blocked out the browsers, but i tried’network monitor Beta 1.0’ that comes free with 'Advanced system care ver 3.7.2 under the utilities tab. the browsers seemed to be blocked quite soon after using this, but not sure if it was the thing that caused it or not. but as soon as avast was disabled the internet browsers all worked.

i’ve had no issues with all the programs on at the same time because i have had them all running at the same time on quite a few occasions.

Spyware doctor Spybot search and destroy IOBIT security 360
Spybot is not worth the hardisk space, the only thing it is able to remove is tracking cookies.......but so does CCleaner Who need SpywareDoctor when you have Malwarebytes www.malwarebytes.org

and here is some info on the company IObit, that can not be trusted

i also have a laptop, the laptop is runnign windows vista home premium 32bit. has the same security software installed but not running. the laptop has no problems connecting to the internet through a web browser.

could the problem be with the ultimate edition of windows or the 64 bit platform?

not hardly.

Give Malwarebytes a go and see what it says.

done a malware bytes scan, fully updated the database, and done a ‘perfume full scan’ scan and came back with nothing after 3 and a half hours scanning.

i wasnt surprised because i scan regularly with other scanners.

uninstalled like it was suggested in some other threads, with the uninstall tool in safe mode.

it worked for a little while.

avast was in an error state, had an update, updated the definitions, and i’s blocking web browsers again.

roguekiller23231 you can not have iobit 360 on the computer at the same time as avast as any two av’s will conflict even if the other av’s are turned off, and spybot hasn’t had the best relationship running with avast either.
Solution- delet iobit 360 and spybot, install malwarebytes with avast

Try resetting winsocks.
Start-(run-)cmd-enter
type ‘netsh winsock reset’ (without quotation marks)
enter, restart your pc.

thanks, this worked. 100% sure on what caused it now, it was the ‘network monitor’ program that came with ‘advanced system care’. as it has done it instantly to my laptop when i tryed it on there.

As was mentioned earlier, we have helped many users here who had ASC and have had to uninstall it because of conflicts with not only Avast but other software as well. In addition, using iorbit 360 with Avast means using 2 AV’s on your machine at the same time, which will create all kinds of problems. Again those users who had this software also uninstalled it and their problems went away. I just wanted to caution you since we have seen enough people and their problems, so you may want to think again about uninstalling it.

There are other options out there that use less memory, are free, and do a better job: MBAM (on-demand), CCleaner (on-demand), Puran Defrag (on-demand), and Avast (resident) will all do what ASC (either on-demand or resident) and iobit 360 (resident) does.

If you decide to uninstall ASC and iobit, use their uninstaller tool and reboot after uninstalling one at a time. Let us know if you have any questions. Thank you.

What other software do you have on your pc. I found ,thanks to SafeSurf and DavidR, that I had conflicting software. All I have for security software is avast free and MBAM Free. Para-Noid,

They have to have at least 20 posts before they can do as you are suggesting.

@ matth68 and ecazdi,

Can you please give me the following information so that I can better help you:

  1. What is your OS (XP XP SP?, Win7), 32 or 64-bit?
  2. What version of Avast did you install? Version 5.0.677?
  3. What other security software do you currently have or did you have in the past on this machine including:
  • Antivirus (AV)
  • Firewall (FW)
  • Trial versions of AV, FW and other security programs
  • Other security software

Please try the following:
Winsockfix Utility:

@ ecazdi: Windows XPhttp://majorgeeks.com/WinSock_XP_Fix_d4372.html then reboot your machine.

@ matth68: Windows 7http://windows7themes.net/winsock-fix-for-windows-7.html then reboot your machine.

Let me know the answers to the above questions, and if the WinsockFix fixed your problem. Thank you.

  1. Support for Windows XP Service Pack 2 ends on July 13, 2010
    http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifean31
You need to update to XP SP 3 as it has MANY Critical updates and performance improvements.

  2. Un-install Advanced Systemcare

@ ecazdi,

Thank you for the compliment. I’m glad things are working for you now. However I do want to warn you that we have seen MANY users have problems with ASC because some versions also contain an AV in it, and you cannot run 2 AV’s (antivirus) at the same time in your machine. The users with ASC that had problems (with and without AV in ASC) with Avast found that uninstalling ASC using the vendor’s uninstaller tool/instructions resolved their problems. So I would recommend that you think about uninstalling ASC, especially if you develop problems down the road.

There are other software that use less memory and do a better job in place of ASC, which are compatible with Avast. These would be:

  1. CCleaner, a free system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. There is a Slim version available as well at http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds – 4th option down. It removes unused files (cache, temporary Internet files, etc.) from your system, allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner.

  2. Puran Defrag free http://www.puransoftware.com/, which supports all OS’s and does regular and boot-time defragging.

  3. Malwarebytes-Antimalware (MBAM) free http://www.malwarebytes.org/ (the blue button) for an on-demand scanner. Pro (paid/resident) version is also available for a one-time lifetime fee and is compatible with Avast.

  4. Even though this is not included in ASC, I do recommend this to check your system to make sure your software is up to date: [b]Secunia Personal Software Inspector /b http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. This site will scan your machine and give you the vendor’s direct link to patch your system making it easy to update. Many of us scan our machines weekly since software changes so frequently. This would also including updating your SP2 to SP3 since this presents a HUGE security hole in your system and you are asking for malware (infections) to come into your machine.

I also suggest that you use a third-party2-way firewall (FW) since the XP Windows is only a 1-way very weak FW and gives you little protection. Users have reported to us that the following FW’s have no conflict with Avast using v. 5.0.677: Online Armor, Outpost, Comodo (without AV). These FW’s come as both free and paid versions.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions. Thank you.
