Avast Free Boot Scan for two days

I’m not sure my installation or setup is correct. My machine has been boot scanning for nearly two days (certainly overnight) now approaching 24 hours. At one point the scanning said 26% but this morning between 6-7 am it found a Trojan and sent it to the chest then went back to scanning and the rest of today it’s been scanning [5%]. I am not sure how I went from 26% to 5% unless it started over after sending several Trojan’s to the Chest?? Can someone explain how this application Virus checker works generally so I know if it is broken or just taking forever to go through this 3 TB drive. No other programs should be running as this is a boot scan. Computer is about 2 years old and has a dual cpu processor. Running XP pro also. Help. I don’t know if I should bail on this scan or stick it out another day?

Hi there are several possible reasons for this and it really depends on the amount of on your hard drive. Also when a Trojan is found the scan mode changes to a much deeper one hence the apparent drop from 26% to 5%

Was this an in place upgrade or a fresh install ?

Thanks for the quick feedback: This is a new install… In fact I guess due to the Trojans I’ve not been successful at registering if that makes a difference? (Limited due to not registration???). I’ve clicked the registration in IE 8 but because there’s a virus it won’t take me to the registration page… So I’m hoping to clean up first then get to the registration page. I put AVAST Free on three days ago but stopped one Boot Scan then restarted the next day (yesterday). It looks like it is scanning one directory in XP in particular; C:\document and settings\networkservice\Local Settings\Temporary Internet files\content.IE5\35FLLEWTR*.* where it has found several Trojan’s and something called HTML_Script-Inf or HTML:Iframe-inf sent to the Chest. It’s finding problems but I’m not sure if when I stopped it the first time if that messed anything up when I restarted the Bootscan. When I restarted I restricted it to the C:\ (System drive) not the extra hard drive (an old drive) or peripheral devices i.e., CD, USB Hub etc.).

OK that is the IE cache and judging by the time it is taking then it probably has not been emptied for a while

If you are having problems I could take a look and clear some bad boys out

To clear the cache

Clear Cache/Temp Files
Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

[*] Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
[*]It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
[*]Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
[*]Once it’s finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.
