Avast Free Boot Time Scan results in Blank Screen after Windows Logo Splash

I have used Avast for years with no difficulty. My current computer is running Windows 7 64 bit. When I schedule a boot time scan instead of the ‘normal’ text showing a boot time scan and options to handle corrupt files, my computer monitor immediately stops detecting any signal from the VGA, and I get a blank screen saying the signal is not available. Any help or know solutions to this would be appreciated. I have to go back and boot in safe mode to get my display back once I disable the boot time scan.

... options to handle corrupt files, ..............
avast is a antivirus program and will only take action on infected files. any corrupt file messages you see is just a scan error message, avast will not take action on none infected files
