Avast Free causing Vista Home Premium constant reboots

Hello,

I installed Avast Free on two Win7 machines and one XP machine…no problems. However, my wife’s Vista Home Premium, 3GB RAM HP laptop goes into a reboot loop upon installing Avast. It gets to the password entry screen of Vista then shuts off and restarts. I have to boot into Safe Mode to uninstall AVAST and then everything works normally. Is there a work around to this?

If not, I’ll have to switch to something else.

Thanks in advance.

Old antivirus before avast?
Any other security program that could interfere?

We uninstalled Avira Antivir just prior to installing Avast. The only other active protection we run is ZoneAlarm free version. We don’t have the security suite version of ZA, so I can’t see any issues coming from that one. Are there known conlficts with Avast and ZA?

I also note that we have recently installed the GPG4WIN encryption engine to run with the Enigmail add-on for Mozilla Thunderbird. I’ve noticed on my computer that Avast refuses to attach the OUTBOUND scan message since we are now encrypting our emails. The inbound scan messages are fine. I am wondering if there is any conflict with the encryption engine. But I would find it hard to believe that would cause a reboot loop…although not out of the question.

There have been problems with ZoneAlarm previously so removing it would help.

Did you make sure you totally removed Avira Antivir as it leaves a lot of stuff around after removal. ???

Download Avira AntiVir Removal Tool

That appears to be a manual VIRUS removal tool… Not a tool to remove traces of Avir after uninstall…am I missing something?

Also, why would I want to remove a perfectly good working firewall due to a conflict with an newly installed AV product? I would replace the AV instead if no solution can be found. I appreciate the suggestion though. Thanks for the assistance.
