Hi guys, is good idea to add threatfire to Avast free - comodo firewall?
Threatfire is very heavy on the system and has caused conflicts with avast in the past and i dont believe it’s been updated in a long time.
The best program you could run alongside avast is Malwarebytes Pro, $25-$30 lifetime license or you can just use the free version with no auto update and realtime protection.
ok thanks ;D
Your welcome
Well hasn’t threatfire ceased development also ???
Not to mention it is a HIPs and if using Comodo firewall with Defence+ that too is HIPS based so it makes threatfire redundant even it is still being developed.
A little background on the current state of PC Tools might help. Symantec bought the outfit a while back. I stongly suspect to eliminate a strong competitor from developing freeware. Therefore, don’t expect a lot of resources being allocated to either Threatfire or the free PC Tools firewall. If you checkout the Threatfire section on the PC Tools forum, you will see comments about sizable layoffs in the last year of Threatfire support personnel.
If your objective is a HIPS with minimal user intervention and fair to average protection, run Comodo’s Defense+ in it’s default “firewall” only configuration. Why Comodo describes it this way is beyond me. Actually Defense+ is installed in it’s “lowest” setting which is adequate protection if you have a good anti-virus software installed with browser protection such as Avast 6, AVG 2012, Norton AV 2012, etc. Comodo’s sandboxing I beleive is also enabled in this default configuartion. You will have to decide to use only one sandbox; Avast’s or Comodo’s.
Finally, note that when running Defense+ proactive + Firewall, most of the HIPS decisions will be based on a Trusted Publisher “whitelist.” Not the wisest thing to use these days in light of hacked and stolen certificates floating around.
Agree there. That’s two HIPS if you use Threatfire. You don’t need Threatfire in my opinion. Comodo’s HIPS is actually good and complements Avast’s security. Some say Threatfire is dead or soon to be (as mentioned it’s underdeveloped --going the way of GesWall…tsk…).
