Avast Free constantly installing

Hi! I’m new here, and have a question that is confusing the heck out of me.

I’ve got Avast Internet Security 7.0.1455 which I’ve been happy with for the last couple of months. A couple of weeks ago my laptop started getting the gremlins and when looking through the list of installed programs I noticed that a version of Avast Free was also installed ( though I had uninstalled it before I loaded the full version ). Thinking that might be the cause of my troubles I uninstalled it. And did find that the kinks in my system seemed to have been cured.

I’ve now noticed that every time Internet Security updates the free version reappears in my program list ??? If I uninstall it, it reappears yet again in no time at all.

Is this normal, or should I be concerned that something is amiss?

That’s a business version, do you have a business (EP) license…??

I merely have what I was sent when I purchased my copy. It was bought from Nexway ( who I understand are a partner/reseller ), and arrived with a download link, activation file, and instructions of how to install it.

Guess this is a no to my question.

  • Which avast! did you purchase…?? (Pro/IS/Premier)
  • OS…?? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?)
  • Other security related software installed…??
  • Which AV did you use before avast!..??

I understood that I was buying the Pro version
Win7 64 Bit Home Premium
MS Security Essentials
MS Security Essentials

I’ve never personally downloaded any SP’s, but what Windows gets up to in the background frightens the heck out of me, which is why I recently turned off automatic update.

First you’ve to uninstall MSE…!!

Then:

  1. Download avast! Pro Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

PS: You should reenable WU…!!

So will the license file I have work with this new install?

If you’ve a valid license, it’ll work.

Well here goes… I’m off into Safe Mode

OK, report back.

Unfortunately, I’ve got another problem now.

Installed the Pro version, installed the license file I have, and it is showing that the subscription has expired. If I go into my Avast account it shows this however ~

I guess this license that I have is for the business version after all, so if that is the case I’ll probably reinstall that version. Which brings me back to the question… why should AvastFree keep getting installed? ;D

So, you don’t know which avast! version you paid for…!?? ???
Please check the mail with the license, so we can find out which version you purchased.

It just says

300432121 avast! Internet Security 1PC, 1 year 1 £19.99

OK, so you’ve AIS not Pro.

  1. Download avast! Internet Security: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

Thing is Asyn, there’s ten months left on this license and I’m not prepared to throw that away. I’m happy to continue using any version of Avast, I just want to get it functioning properly.
Yesterday, after I reinstalled the version I had bought, it updated itself to v8.0.1483, and this morning there wasn’t any free version to be found listed in my program files so I’m wondering if the problem might have been solved by using uninstall tool, which might have cleaned out any residual files from my earlier free version. Dunno!

No need to throw it away, follow my instructions above.
