Avast (Free) doesn't work with Silverlight video on website: uitzendinggemist.nl

The website: uitzendinggemist.nl is a popular site for watching (missed) Dutch tv programs which are already broadcasted.

This website uses Silverlight as the standard video player. With Avast the video doesn’t start. The notification reads: connection to video server failed (translated from dutch: verbinden met videoserver mislukt). The commercial, also shown with Silverlight does work however, this is shown first for about 20 sec… After that, the requested program should show up, but it doesn’t, with the failure message as said before.
If you turn off the Avast-shields (even temporary), the video starts without flaws.
This is reproducible on Firefox and IE9. I can’t tell with other browsers. Link to reproduce: http://www.uitzendinggemist.nl/afleveringen/1289837

I don’t say this is the fault of Avast, perhaps the website does something wrong, but I did want to mention it here.

Working for me with the shields on 8)

Anthony

Did you wait until the commercial was finished?

Yes

This is the start of it

I could not make the pic bigger because there is a restriction in file size upload size

Anthony

That is the correct picture, yes.

It is strange: there is a ton of complains about the issue and at least some people mentioned the same: turning off the Avast shields helped. After that, I tried the same by turning them off as well and it works for me as well. :o

Bit weird, i would enable the shields

Try accessing the video again

Still reproducible: the video only shows up with the shields turned off (or switching to Flash player as the preferred player, but this isn’t selected as default)

verbinden met videoserver mislukt

i just got that, all i did was refresh and it worked.

Sometimes you get when you open a stream to the message "Failed to connect to video server. How can this be?

1Mbit
For some time Uitzendinggemist transmits its programs in 1Mbit quality. This also requires more of your connection speed. If your connection is too slow, you can notice Failed to connect to video server get.

Looking into lower quality
This problem can be solved by your player via the menu button right below the video quality down to adjust.

Lowering your video quality is unfortunately only possible if your stream is started and therefore works only with buffering problems. We are currently working on a solution for this problem. Peaks in the visit There are some moments in the day when many people simultaneously use Uitzendinggemist. Especially now that we are in the raised 1Mbit-quality broadcasting, these peaks in data ensure that the communication Failed to connect to video server appears.

If this situation occurs, there is unfortunately little you can do as a user. At a later time, try again to request the stream is the only solution.

Our IT department is aware of this situation and is working hard to increase our cappaciteit. Because this is a costly and time-consuming process, it may take time before this issue is fully resolved. Until then, we ask your understanding and patience.

Thanks for searching for this. It does work on the lower connection speeds (with shields on), but not on the 1mbit. Still strange that turning off the shield helps here :o
