I tried to do a check for disk errors in Windows 7 (64-bit) on C and it did not work at first!!
I did the following:
—Right-click on C, Properties, Tools tab, check now button pressed, I selected both “automatically fix file system errors” and “scan for and attempt recovery of bad sector errors”.
Then the OS told me that this task will be schedule to the next restart.
—I restarted and waited 15 hours and nothing happened!!! The only message I saw was:
Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
A disk check has been scheduled.
To skip disk checking, press any key within 10 second(s).
—Not a single second during these 15 hours did Windows 7 give me any kind of status on the task that was carried out!! No percentage to show how much had been done and no percentage to show how much remained to be done!!!
—At the end of these 15 hours, seeing that it did not work, I then cut the power supply and rebooted.
—When I disabled fully the avast software, I was able to do this check for errors (chkdsk) VERY BASIC OPERATION normally!
—But I tried to do the same on D and I rebooted but it repeated this same no response simply because I believe avast is being reactivated at each reboot even though it shows as being disabled (an x on the icon)!!
I again disabled avast and I was able to do the same operation on D!!
VERY SCARY AND VERY UNWELCOME!!
If you do not solve this BIG problem in a future update, I will stop using your software because that is only one problem that I have noticed and I do not know what other similar problems are present without me having noticed them in the first place!
That is not all! First, I registered with the support section and I discovered that in order to post in this forum, I had to do a separate (second) registration!!! PLAIN CRAZY!!
I give you a friendly advice: put a link on your software allowing the person to send you feedback without having to register!! Many times, I do not even bother going through the hassle of registering just to point out a problem.
Do I need to tell you that one registration should allow me to post to the forum without having to do a second one?!!
there aren’t any other software company allowing to use the same registration data for requesting support on an individual basis and posting on a forum, none, okay?
As to you check disk issue, if it doesn’t work from windows (schedule not retained, or not working) try chkdsk from a console using the repair options available when booting your Windows DVD. I f you don’t have one (ie if you only got a recovery partition + recovery DVDs) create a repair disk from Windows and boot with it.
I just ran chkdsk on my system, (win 7 64bit ultimate) it ran fine, no issues found the whole run was done in about 6-7 minutes.
I initiated this from an elevated cmd.
Details: hit start, type cmd, right click cmd hit run as admin. then give the command “chkdsk /x /f c:”
edit: I got full status messages for every action.
OK, that’s certainly enough.
The inappropriate posts have been removed, and followups (in that tone) will be rewarded by a ban.
The support section and the forum are completely independent servers / software / sites - therefore there are two logins. I don’t think this is going to change, be it “plain crazy” or not.
As for the chkdsk problem, never heard of anything like that. Was it avast! Free / Pro or IS?
You said you did: "hit start, type cmd, right click cmd hit run as admin. then give the command “chkdsk /x /f c:” "
I was wondering, when you do the command chkdsk /x /f c: at the command prompt, does it restart your computer with a reboot? Or does it do it without restarting your computer?
As I said before in a post that has been deleted, I already uninstalled completely avast from my computer.
I repeat, avast is very good at what it does, antivirus and antimalware. However, it is so tightly entangled into the Windows OS that it is very problematic for me.
There is even an avast uninstall utility that avast has judged necessary to provide at http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility , probably because it is so entangled into your OS that even the uninstall does not get rid of it fully! Me, I had to do a complete restore in order to be fully sure.
I hope my remarks will help the avast team to solve these important issues; that was my goal when I took the (long) time to do two separate registration just to post on this forum!
A software that prevents me from using NORMALLY the very basic tools provided by the Windows 7 Operating System such as check disk for errors (chkdsk) is very problematic, at least for me.
1/ First of all, I installed avast on W7 x64 Ultimate just about a week ago. It had no problems w/ chkdsk at all. Same for another guy above. So, your issue is certainly not a global one.
2/ It’s been already said here that it’s better to uninstall avast via control panel and the bundled (un)installer which does more complete job. The removal tool is meant as emergency one if the normal procedure doesn’t work.
3/ Many vendors provide removal tools for their products, drawing conclusions like you did above from this fact is just wrong.
There’s no “overtight” integration here… and your implications about the [existence of the] uninstall utility are also wrong. The ordinary uninstall works as it should under normal circumstances, but yes, it might come handy in extreme cases (conflicts with other low-level software, corrupted installations, etc.)
The problems with chkdsk are certainly not something normal, happening for other users (well, most users wouldn’t probably notice, but this is the first similar report, so we’d certainly hear about it before if it were common). Could be a conflict with something else on your machine, or maybe something manifesting only for a particular driver… hard to say. Since you already uninstall it, however… I guess we won’t find out.
I fully understand why you removed the abusive posts…!
It’s not that important, but for curiosity, why did you also remove mine, meant to bring peace to the guys??

hi everyone i put this to show in a fresh installation windows 7 SP1 32 bits without updates yet i can’t run the chkdsk with avast 10.3.2225 recently installed, i did uninstalled and worked again chkdsk, i’m updating the system to verify if a driver or service installed by avast cause conflict with a old version of OS, i’m updating the entire system with the base program (office, web browsers, driver, etc.) with use commonly, after install all updates, i will install avast again to prove the conflict didn’t happen again, i speak spanish, if you see any weird explanation, correct me, i don’t have any problem with that, i use google translate to help the concordances, i do a new post after that to show any progression.
modified, new version 10.3.2233, i will try with both to share if still happen or change in any of these, coming soon ;D
