Just today Avast! Free Edition 2014 9.0.2018.392 Final appeared on MajorGeeks http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/avast_free_edition.html but when I check program version on Avast "About Avast"it says 2014 9.0.2018.
When I run a program update on Avast it says it is already updated. So what is the deal with this new version on MajorGeeks?
Thanks.
Just for fun, I decided to do a clean uninstall of the latest version and download/install the new 90.3mb version that is resident on MajorGeeks and also accessible via the Avast offline installer link as well. It appears the newer version contains yet another “popup purchase offer” that I do not remember seeing before; however, other than that, it looks exactly the same as before:

Update: I should have clarified that before this new installer, I only saw 1 advertisement (eg, choice); however, this new one comes right after the original upgrade to Avast Pro offer or stay with basic protection prompt.
Just found another subtle change. The blue box “everything’s OK” was replaced with a simple text notification:

Hmm… now the blue box is back… I wonder if big brother is watching this thread?

That popup as you call it has been there for many versions ( nothing new ) and is a once off after registration.
It changes to the blue information popup after rebooting

Hi CraigB,
That may be true but I have never noticed it and, since I do a clean install of every new installer offered, I try to notice differences; however, I cannot say for sure that second offer was not there before. Anyway, I do remember seeing one offer (during registration) but not two. So, if nothing is different, then maybe you can offer some explanation as to why Avast chose to update their installer from .391 to .392. Moreover, maybe you can explain why the installer size jumped from 88.x mbs to 90.3 mbs? There must be a reason for this and understanding why would be nice to know.

Possibly some emergency update fixes were included since the first installer was released and new definitions included.

Right click the AvastUI.exe file > properties > version > file version and you can see if you have the .391 or another version

@craigb: Now that I can certainly agree with.
@eddy: You seem to be ahead of the curve on this one; in that I do still have the .391 avastui.
Unfortunately, I took the bait and tried to find a difference that was identifiable and I guess I missed the mark; however, I still don’t remember that second popup (as I refer to it). In any event, I apologize if my efforts led to some confusion here.

Greetings, all…
Just thought I put in my $.02 worth. I downloaded the new version of avast! Free from MajorGeeks and installed over the top of my existing 9.0.2018.391.
Several files have changed, but none was avastui.exe. Interestingly, in the main avast! folder, I got a new aswstreamfilter.dll (which is identifed as 9.0.2018.394) and an aswstreamfilter.dll.sum. In the \Setup folder, I found a new version of instup.dll (with an instup.dll.sum) which shows as version .392, while in \Setup\INF\x64, there were new aswsnx.sys, aswsp.sys and aswstm.sys files (.394 version) with corresponding .sum files for each; the new .sys files also appeared in Windows\system32\Drivers.
So something seems to have changed in some important files, but, like all of you, I don’t know what…

You certainly did your homework on this one! Thanks a bunch!

Think nothing of it, plsrepli! This is what happens when you’re mildly obsessive-compulsive and have way too much time on your hands.
BTW, everything seems to be working smoothly with the new files up and running.
