Avast Free freezes computer when disabling Real-Time Shields

I always turn off my Real-Time Shield during games for my small amount of RAM’s sake, and whenever i do, it freezes the computer. It turned off fine yesterday (The day I installed it - this is my 2nd day), and now I have to hold the power button to shut it off. Can someone help? No error codes or anything, either.

avast doesn’t use that much in the way of resources, why not just try turning on the Silent/Gaming mode. Personally with the price of RAM I would have though that to be a reasonable upgrade as it relatively easy to do and will improve overall system performance.

What is the avast version that you are using, 5.0.418 is the latest.

What is your OS ?

WinXP SP3
Avast v.5.0.418

I know, but silent/gaming mode just shuts off the messages, not the real-time scanner. Since the game takes up 400mb of my 1gb RAM, i need all the memory i can get out of it.

Well if you check what your task manager says is being used by avast, it isn’t very much (in the larger scheme of things), see what mine is currently.

As I said a RAM upgrade would help overall performance.

Any other security program that could interfere?
Check the folder \data\log
Are there any files called unpXXXX (where XXXX is a random number) or *.mdmp there?
If so, send them to vlk (at) avast.com
They may contain more information about the problem (maybe a link to this thread).
