Avast! Free Has Messsed Up My Computer

Nicely put, are you sure you’re not a politician/

Yes, I got the same impression. It was very frustrating when I had to tell the technician that I cannot download Internet Explorer 7 or higher, due to having only a 32 bit PC, and that without that I can’t download the link they sent to me of McAfee free. I had to repeat that several times and when it finally sunk in he just said, without the download you are out of luck.

What started the problem I am having now with my Avast is, after I followed their instructions and removed Avast from my PC and all that, and after I discovered that I cannot download IE 7 or higher, I immediately went to Avast to download and reinstall it. When I did this, THIS is when the problems began, and from corresponding with you and the others helping me here, I have to remove all the left over stuff from my original installation that was lerft behind when I uninstalled it–and this is what you are trying to help me with. Is this correct?

Yep that’s it, remove all residue and start again

Okay, great thanks.

Can we go back to where you were asking me to download the Farbar Recovery Tool?

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

[*]Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
[*]Select additions at the bottom
[*]Press Scan button.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/73555776/frst.JPG

[*]It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
[*]Please attach both logs generated.

Thanks! Here are the results of the Farbar Scan:

This is the first of the two pages that came up:

Thanks ever so much for these instructions, and for looking over the stuff I sent you.

I am really nervous about doing all of this but will try. Always I am afraid of messing up the computer beyond my control. I hope I can do all of this, lol.

I’ll let you know the outcome. And again, thanks ever so much for all your help!

Steve

You do need SP3 though as your system is full of security holes at the moment

Okay, thanks. I am trying to download it as I type, but have run into a snag.

When I click on the link you posted, to take me to Microsoft to download SP3, I am taken to the page(attachment) that tells me I need IE 5 or higher. I have IE 6, but since Microsoft no longer does updates for 6, I cannot use IE to download the SP3.

This is the other page that came up. I clicked on the option that says “recommended” which took me to the page I just sent moments ago. I didn’t know what to do out of fear of doing the wrong thing.

OK give me half an hour and I should have it on my dropbox for you… So hold off 'till then

Or you can click the radio button that says proceed with this download

Okay, I’ll try the radio button. When I clicked on “Proceed with download” it took me to this page(attachment) and the top option is about IE 8, the bottom is a tool that checks my PC for infections and such. I didn’t want to proceed beyond this point w/o checking with you first.

On the right should be a no thanks button press that

Ok.

One thing…I am using XP, 32 bit, and IE will not allow me to download 7 or higher because of this. Is this going to be a problem?

Have you managed to download it ? As dropbox has blocked me from uploading it

It is downloading as we speak. Still has 11 minutes to go. Can you look up at my previous message to you moments ago?
