As I will be about to download Avast free Home edition I would like to know the step by step for Microsoft Outlook 2000 as my email client.
Also does it matter which email address to use for registration, in other words can you use the same reg code for a different email address?
Also is it easy to update to beta from the previous working version?
Just install avast… the Outlook plugin must be enabled.
Outlook 2000 > Tools menu > Options > Other > Advanced Options > Add-In Manager.
Sure, avast protects all emails accounts in MS Outlook, not only the one used for registration. For other email programs (like OE or Thunderbird), just run Mail Protection Wizard.
I had a look what is there at the moment and I see that there are 2 ticked boxes, one is for AVG and the other says net folders.
Once I uninstall AVG I suppose they will disappear, and when I install Avast I will see Avast’s details in there, and when you said the plugin must be enabled, are these the boxes you were referring to that must be ticked?
Please, uninstall AVG first and boot. Only after that, install avast.
I’m referring to avast entry into Outlook settings (I think it will be only one entry).
In Outlook Express theres a couple of questions under the security tab within a subtitle called virus protection
Are these 2 options linked to any AV thats in use ?
Or are they stand alone actions that Outlook will do by itself ? If so, would checking either of these 2 questions cause a conflict ? Presuming that the AV would decide what to do itself with a mail item…
These options are from the email program and not from the antivirus.
They won’t conflict with the antivirus operation.
I would check the first only.
The second, although it’s a security point, will block you to open/save any attached file (like documents, sheets, etc.).
I too would suggest you only check the first option.
The second doesn’t actually scan anything, just that Outlook won’t let you save or send attachments that ‘might’ be a virus and they do this on nothing more than the file type of the attachment. You wouldn’t believe some of the pathetic file types it considers dangerous, I believe .zip files are included in this ‘dangerous’ list. Considering a zip file must first be unpacked and second execute the file/s inside and before you could do that avast would scan it.
So I would say your common sense should be a damn sight better than this pathetic measure, don’t open attachments or click links in unsolicited emails. Even if the email isn’t unsolicited, never open the attachment directly from the email, save it to your HDD where avast ‘should’ scan it. I would also suggest you do a right click (ashQuick) context menu scan of the file.
Oh yea, sure, I know all about not opening attachments from unknown sources, I would always save the file before scanning or something similar first like you say.
Wouldn’t of guessed that the second option would stop you from even receiving a zip file though, lol.
