Avast Free IE10 Browser Add-ons

Good Afternoon,

I’m using the free version 2014.9.0.2007 on a W7 HE 64-bit machine with IE10.

Since upgrading Avast to version 9, I am experiencing the same problem on several W7 machines.

I experimented by enabling all Add-ons in IE10 in my machine.
This caused the above error message when I began to type text into the Google Search box.

I then disabled each add-on one-at-a-time, checking Google Search each time.
When I disabled the Avast Toolbar & Browser Helper Object add-ons, Google then worked normally.
Avast is the only add-on that causes this IE10 Google error.
It appears that Avast considers Google as being a threat to security, so denies access.

I did the same on a few other W7 64-bit computers with the same results. I also contacted a mate who is an IT expert, and he said that he now routinely advises others to disable the Avast add-ons because of this problem.
As my problem appears not to be unique to my own machines, is there a compatibility problem with Google Search or perhaps an inherent bug?
Resetting IE10 to default settings did not cure this problem. As soon as I enable the Avast Add-ons again, the problem then re-occurs.

Interesting that you should get a different result than I did. Upon install and start of IE10 on my Win7 Ultimate SP1 64 bit machine, I was told that the Avast Online Security add-ons were incompatible with IE10. A check of Manage Add-Ons showed them to be listed as such, incompatible. Not disabled or enabled, just incompatible. Same for my Real Player Download helper add-on. It seems that the Online Security add-ons in Avast have problems with IE. I uninstalled them and all is working fine now, with IE10 in Enhanced Protected Mode.

Hello scrumdown! I too had a similar issue with Avast Online Security with IE10 which caused IE10 to load it’s homepage google.com really slow, but opening IE10 is fast. Back then I had avast 2014.9.0.2006, I then reported this issue to Avast. When they came up with their reply, Avast 2014.9.0.2007 was released and then the issue automatically was gone and I told them it’s fixed by the new release.

If you are still facing this issue, I suggest you uninstall your current version of avast by add/remove and run http://www.avast.com/en-nz/uninstall-utility.

After that download and install a fresh install of Avast. After installing it, avast will do a startup scan. After that has been completed register your Avast antivirus and restart your computer again.

Since you are using IE10, IE 11 got recently released. I suggest you install IE 11.

Thank you Gregg and staticguy for your replies.

I have a number of networked W7 machines, so it would be a bit of a chore having to do a clean reinstall of Avast for each machine.

Instead, I’m waiting for the IE11 rollout per Windows Updates although I’m aware that it’s available now.
Those on automatic updates will get it whether they want it or not.

I won’t knock Avast for these various IE10 problems. I’ve used it for years, and am grateful to Avast for providing me with such an excellent program.

It’s my understanding that at present some if not all of Avast’s web reputation functions don’t as yet work with Internet Explorer and that they are a work in progress at the moment, so I’m not sure whether there is any advantage in leaving the Avast add ons enabled in that particular browser.

I must apologize… my comments regarding the incompatibility of AOS were in reference to IE11, not IE10. With IE10 in Enhanced Protected Mode, they simply were disabled. In IE11, same mode, they are shown as “incompatible”. IOW, AOS and IE seem to regularly have problems together. Perhaps I shouldn’t, but I choose to continue running IE in Enhanced Protected Mode, and uninstall AOS components.

Hello, I have the same problem. I´m running windows 7 ultimate/64bits with latest avast free 9.0.2008 but IE 10/11 still not working. Even with modules/addons disabled. Only after complet uninstallation of avast I´m able to start IE corectly. With avast running, IE just pops up a message that it has to be closed…

this would be avast webrep security plugin issue just disable it

As well as my OP problem with Google, another problem has arisen since upgrading to avast free 9.0.2008 with both IE10 & IE11.

I now find that even with the Avast add-ons disabled, SmartScreen Filter and Popup Blocker turned off, I can no longer upload images to Photobucket.
I can access my albums OK, but am now unable to upload to PB on my three W7 machines.

I have no problem uploading images using Firefox on all three W7 machines.

When I had IE10, I had no problems with PB. It’s only since I upgraded to Avast 9 that these problems emerged.

Hello scrumdown, my wife`s W7 Home Premium 64 bit m/c with IE10 crashed with the Avast Online Security add-on enabled. I then updated it to IE11 and with AOS enabled does not now crash.

Update - To be fair to Avast, my Photobucket problem has disappeared now that all my W7 machines have been upgraded from IE10 to IE11.
I can now upload images to PB on all W7 machines using IE11.

All my browser settings remained unchanged, so there must have been a conflict specifically with IE10.

It might be an IE10 problem. I am still using Avast 8 and I can not upload photos to Facebook using IE10. I have to use Chrome or Firefox instead.
