Avast Free install error log

Hello,

I am trying to install Avast Free (version 10.2.2218.942) on an ancient Pentium 3 desktop computer with a clean install of Windows XP SP3 for some children to use but keep getting an installation error message.

I have attached the error log and would appreciate any help to resolve this problem.

Thanks,
Timescope.

  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

Hello Asyn,

I tried to install Avast after installing Windows Xp. After several attempts using aswClear in between in safe mode and doing a disk check, I installed Malwarebytes and it found no problems.

Thanks,
Timescope.

So, does it work now or not…??

No, Avast will not install that’s why I posted the error log.

I also noticed that the “PCI Simple Controller” does not have a driver but I can not go online to find one without antivirus installed.

Timescope.

See, if that helps…

  1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

Thanks Asyn, I will let you know the result in a few hours time (145MB @ 8kB/s = hours)

Are MD5 or SHA hashes available to check the downloaded setup files ?
The hashes of the setup file I downloaded yesterday from http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe are :

MD5 Checksum: A39D192C44ED80492474415129CCA0EA
SHA-1 Checksum: A8F040ED66DBCE5B8E631327940E078EF25390CA

Thanks,

Hi Asyn

I have downloaded the setup file from the link you provided but it is exactly the same as the one I was using (matched hashes).
It may be a problem with the Windows installation so I will format the HDD and run the Windows Xp setup again.

I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks,
Timescope.

Update : I removed the HDD and slaved it on my HP machine.

Avast found a Trojan in pagefile.sys : Win32:Crypt-KIB [Trj].

Back to : Format > install Windows > install Avast

Timescope.

Hello,

Several hours later, I am back where I started with the same installation error. The GUI has a big red X and “restart computer” message.

I did the following:

1 Removed hard disk from the Pentium 3 machine and connected it as slave on my HP Pentium 4.
2. Scanned the hard disk with Avast on HP machine.
3. Avast found a Trojan (posted above)
4. Formatted the hard disk.
5. Deleted the partition in disk management.
6. Installed the hard disk in the Pentium 3 machine and installed Windows Xp.
7. Tried to install Avast and got the same error.

Looking through the log, it appears that the problem starts here:

2015-06-19 00:55:16Infopackageinfo[480,748]IsFullOkay: ais_gen_crt_x86-7e3.vpx - is okay (it exists and has valid signature)
2015-06-19 00:55:17Noticepackageinfo[480,748]IsFullOkay: ais_gen_gui_nosse2-7d5.vpx - not okay (doesn't exist)

A few lines later, setup tries to connect to the internet :

After numerous attempts, setup finally gives up trying to connect to the internet and starts to uninstall:

Please correct any wrong assumptions in my translation of the log.

I will try the same setup file on another motherboard and hard disk drive tomorrow to find out if it is a hardware or software problem.

OK, please report back tomorrow.

Update:

  1. Avast version 10.0.2208.712 (downloaded 20th November 2014) installed without any problems and virus definitions updated using vpsupd version 9.0.2018.392 ( 15th June 2015).

  2. Avast version 10.2.2218.942 will not install

  3. I have not tested the latest Avast setup on the other P3 motherboard yet.
