I’ve been recently having to try to manually update my Avast Free AV program to no avail. It is set to update automatically, but can’t get the proper files.
Currently running Avast Free v5.0.889 and definitions 110108-1
Can anyone shed some light on how I can get a current set of virus definitions and the program running properly?

Should you not register it first in order to enable downloading of the updates?

The program is registered. I downloaded and installed it in December. The registration is listed as Dec 14, 2010.
Apologies for not clarifying that.

If your using a firewall other than the windows one have you set trusted rule’s for all avast processes in it ?
Have you tried a repair of avast ?

I am using only the Windows Firewall. I’ve just set it to allow Avast to pass through, but the update was still unsuccessful.
I have not tried to repair Avast. What is the process for that?
Also, is there a way to manually download the new virus definitions and point avast to them?

Why can’t you get updates, what errors are displayed ?
The latest free version is 5.1.889 not 5.0.889, is this a typo or is that what is displayed in the avastUI ?
Have you tried a manual update and if so any errors, etc. ?
Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You may need to reboot after the repair.

No errors are displayed. It attempts to download the file vps_32-3ab-3aa.vpx and apparently times out. It appears both the virus definitions and the program are wanting to be updated, but can not.
I’ll attempt the repair process as you described.

I can not repair the program. I get an error that states “Error processing packages. Please use full update”

OK
Download the avast5 full updates file 31MB (vpsupd.exe) from this page avast! VPS Update - Manual Download , save it to your hard disk where you can find it again.
Now just double click on this file and it will install the full database.
