This notebook had been running Avast Free ok for a year, it had Windows 8.1 .
After the notebook was updated to Windows 10, it started causing issues with the internet connection. Sometimes it works, most times the router lights go off and it is restarted, right when the computer boots up. Other times this happens some minutes after the computer has been in use. The router restarts, then connection is ok for like 10 seconds, and then it restarts again.
We nailed the problem down to Avast Free. We uninstalled it and the computer worked ok. We did a new install, and it started with the same issue again. We rebooted the computer many times to see if it would fix with no luck.
Has anybody experienced the same problem with Windows 10?
I have also posted on the support ticket that I created with the original issue when receiving mail. I am waiting for a reply there. Ticket is #ROF-612-67278 . To make story short: we purchased Avast Premier license for the 3 computers, wanted to have more protection, but had to get a refund due to being unable to receive email on the Windows XP and Windows 7 ones. The Windows 10 one worked well with Premier, it did not cause the problem with the router (my son doesn’t use email programs so I don’t know if there was issue with that on this computer). When we got the Premier cancelled because we could not use it in 2 of 3 computers, we uninstalled it from all (full uninstall) and then installed Free. This solved the issue reported on the other ticket that you mentioned, when receiving email, it works well with Free. But the Windows 10 one has this issue of breaking up the internet connection. Looks like one solution is not good for all.
I can’t try another router, this is the one provided by my ADSL provider.
Thanks for your help Pondus. I think the easier path will be to get a Premier license for this Windows 10 computer only, and use Free on the two ones where Premier caused trouble to receive emails. I have posted on the support ticket, asking how do I go about getting a new license for this computer only, without messing up the refund process for the previous purchase. I am waiting for a reply in there. I hope they reply fast.
It was provided by my ISP and I need to use it in order to connect to their service. I cannot just replace it by any other router, since it is configured to connect to their service and the router is locked, I don’t have the password to access configuration.
