Avast Free Smart Scan hangs at 14%

I have a Toshiba 64-bit laptop, running Windows 10 Home, 8gb memory, 1Tb hard drive.

I’ve used Avast Antivirus for a long time and like it very much. I had some computer problems recently and I re-installed Avast. I didn’t believe it to be the problem, and it wasn’t, but it was better to be safe and rule out possible causes so I re-installed it.

Since then, at least three times, when I’ve run the Smart Scan, it hangs at 14%, although the blue circle is still going around. This morning it sat at 14% for over two hours. Finally, I canceled it. It is currently running again and has been for almost 90 minutes, again sitting at 14%. The only other thing I have open is this Avast Forum screen. The scan rapidly gets to 14% but then hangs there. Is this a normal occurrence? Should I re-install it again? Any idea what is causing this and how to prevent it? Thanks for your help.

Repair Avast:

Control Panel → Add/Remove programs → Avast
Click on ‘Repair’.
Follow instructions.
Reboot.

I repair the Avast using control panel and it still freezes at 80%. I tried reinstalling Avast again and still it does that…Why?

Which components do you have selected in your Smart Scan. Which ones are completed and which one gets stuck during the scan?
You can disable individual Smart Scan components leaving just the virus scan and see what happens then when you run Smart Scan.
Do you have any other antivirus software installed. Or have had in the past?
