Avast free stops laptop waking up

If I close the lid to put the laptop into sleep mode, then open it again, the computer will not resume.
Not only that, it won’t do anything at all, I cannot find any way to resume or power down the machine or anything.

The only way out is to manually remove the battery, which is likely to damage the laptop.

If I disable Avast protection via the system tray icon, I can suspend and resume as normal and it will keep working until I enable Avast again, then the problem returns.

I have now un-installed Avast and replaced it with AVG free (don’t like) and the laptop is still working just fine.

So does anyone know the cause of this problem or of any workarounds?

Avast Free 2012 running on Windows 7 64-bit
Laptop is a HP Pavillion dm4-1150ea

I should add that on another HP laptop (G62), also running Avast Free with Windows 7 64-bit does not suffer from the same problem.

welcome to the forum. i think you might have been hit by a rough becouse avast has not been realasing anything called avast free 2012. its just avast free.

do a scan with malwarebytes antimalware for a second option and see if that comes up with anything.

download install update and do a scan. don’t forget to remove what it finds. and a system reboot might be needed.

avast free 2012 could be a variant of this one http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-win-7-antispyware-2012. just a thought of my.
