Today is the day, my Avast registration just expired.
So, as usual, I go to the registration form in the Avast software, choose “Stay with the free license”, and fill in the form.
Unfortunately, I get an error, and thus can’t register : “Le fichier spécifié est introuvable” (yes, I’m french…). This means “The specified file was not found”.
No worries, I use the offline registration form, on the Avast website. I receive as expected an email from Avast, giving me the activation key. I enter it clicking on the “Insert license key” button, and I get another error : “MY_KEY n’est pas une clé de licence valable” (“MY_KEY is not a correct license key”).
I run Windows 7 Pro 64bit, 6.1, ver 7601. My laptop is a Samsung R580. But I don’t think that it can help, as Avast has been running on my computer for over a year, without any problem…
Also : Windows is beginning to crash a lot. Like 2 BSODs a week… I will have to reinstall it dies completely. I perhaps have some worms… I use cacaoweb, which is known to be a huge backoor for viruses (I already have had to get rid of an annoying trojan because of it).
I hope you can help me,
thanks for your help and your cool software!
I already tried to renew my license with both methods.
Online method : After filling in the form, I don’t obtain the “Tahnk you for registering” boc. Instead, I get an alert box “the specified file was not found”.
Offline method : After putting the key in avast’s box, I get another error message : “THE_KEY is not a valid license key”.
Does this file log only the installation process, or also all the updates and registration attempts?
Because I installed Avast more than one year ago, and it used to work fine…
Please follow Tech’s instructions so we can read the file. Thank you.
What version of Avast are you using?
Can you please run Malwarebytes (MBAM) to to check for malware in the meantime?
· Download freehttp://www.malwarebytes.org/ for an on-demand scanner.
· Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
· After install, click update so you have latest database before scanning.
· Under Settings:
o General: Automatically Save File After Scan Completes is checked off
o Scanner Settings: Check all boxes
o Updater: Download and install update if available is checked off
· Once the program has loaded, select “Perform FULL Scan”, then click Scan.
· The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
· When the disinfection scan is complete, a log will appear in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note).
· Click the “remove selected” button to quarantine anything found. You will find the infection details under the Quarantine tab.
· The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
· Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro. Or even upgrade your key from old versions.
Check and post the results. If, for any reason, you did not solve, try doing the step 3 in Safe Mode anyway.

Maybe you could set avast to use No proxy at all instead of using the automatic discovery of proxy.

Unfortunately, all these worms are false positive I know, like NO-CDs or else.
Also :
Please follow Tech’s instructions so we can read the file. Thank you.
This is exactly what I did : The copied lines are the 455 last of my setup.log. I just posted it on pastebin for it not to take to much space on the topic.
@Tech : I didn’t do what you told me already, but I will. Avast didn’t even start this time, telling me a translation dll was missing.
I am leaving for the week tomorrow, so I won’t reply until then, sorry for the unconvenience.
But thanks for your help already !
I think what I must re-install is WIndows, in fact. I told you I had 2 BSODs a week. Add to this NO-CDs and other, cacaoweb, etc, I think you get a pretty corrupted OS…
But I will re-install Avast before it, next week, at least for the record.
@ Gargamel
Those softwares are certainly not the cleanest ever but I trust the sources and ran this stuff in sandbox before using them for real. I think they are OK.
IMO, based on the MBAM log, I think you should update MBAM again and quarantine and follow the directions given to you to quarantine the infected items (CD or not). If you want your machine working again, you can’t assume that these are false positives. If after doing this it doesn’t work, then I would uninstall and reinstall Avast.
