Avast Free, unsecured, wont uninstall

Hi ive had a few BSOD in the past 24 hours from another program, and after one of them when everything was back to normal, updated from Avast 6 to 7 (held off doing it earlier knowing itd wanto restart the system) It updated fine, but today had another BSOD from that other program and was forced to do a system repair, and chose the system restore option

Problem is the system restore removed the update to Avast7 (so its back on 6.0.1367) but the program now says its unsecured with a ‘fix now’ box and Urgent message below it with ‘Start Program’ but neither of them do anything so I then tried to uninstall Avast but it refuses, even in safe mode, just shows the message

Error reading product data from “C:\Program Files\AVAST\Software\Avast\setup\part-setup_aus-557.vpx”. Setup cannot continue.

ive also tried installing the full version of Avast7 (downloaded from cnet) hoping it might have an uninstall built in thatd remove the broken 6.0.1367 but no luck there either, after the message above it says

An error 0 (00000000) has occured. Last performed operation was: spawning

The only idea left would be delete the whole Program Files/AVAST folder, do a registry clean and hope Avast7 can then install. Is this a bad idea? and if deleting everythings the only way, what other location have files that need to be removed which a registry cleaner wont pickup? Im using Windows7 64

  1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
  3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

Ok thanks ill try that utility

Did you download the Avast uninstaller tool and put it on your desktop and follow the instructions?

Did you download the download file and save it somewhere on your hard drive?

All sorted, the uninstaller worked and ive reinstalled it, everythings working properly

thanks Asyn

You’re welcome.
